How whales can take those big gulps

Whales that feed by taking big gulps of the ocean have a special sensory organ in the middle of their jaws that helps them regulate their unique feeding methods, researchers find. The once-hidden organ prevents injury as the whales gulp whale-size mouthfuls of water.

"We think this sensory organ sends information to the brain in order to coordinate the complex mechanism of lunge-feeding, which involves rotating the jaws, inverting the tongue and expanding the throat pleats and blubber layer," study researcher Nick Pyenson of the Smithsonian Institution said in a statement.

The researchers studied rorqual whales, the largest group of baleen whales. They include nine species like the blue whale, which can weigh up to 165 tons (150 metric tonnes). The smallest rorqual whale is the northern minke whale, which weighs in at nearly 10 tons (9 metric tonnes).

The results are detailed in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature.

Big bites
To feed, a rorqual whale will lunge at a spot in the water, open its mouth hugely wide, stretching a large patch of soft tissue between its jaws, and engulfing a school of fish or tiny shrimp-like krill and water about the size of the whale itself in one bite. The process takes about six seconds.

The water then gets filtered back into the ocean through baleen at the front of the whale's mouth, which slowly returns to normal size while retaining the food caught.

To facilitate this type of feeding, the whales have two large connected jawbones very loosely attached to the rest of their skull. The researchers studied the connection between these two bones in fin and minke whales, both young and old specimens, which were caught commercially in Iceland.

Special sensor
The researchers discovered a special new organ in the cartilage joint between these two elastic jawbones. The organ is about the size of a grapefruit, and is full of nerves and blood vessels, which seem to feed into structures in the mouth that detect changes in pressure, called mechanoreceptors.

These mechanoreceptors seem to respond to the rotation of the whale's jaws while the mouth is opening, something that puts pressure on the joint between the jawbones; the receptors also sense the expansion of the soft tissue inside the mouth.

The changes the organ senses are sent back to the brain, to help coordinate feeding, the researchers suspect. The information could be used to regulate how fast the mouth opens and how much the throat pouch expands to maximize the volume of water captured, all without overdoing the amount of stress put on the jaw and mouth.

"In terms of evolution, the innovation of this sensory organ has a fundamental role in one of the most extreme feeding methods of aquatic creatures," study researcher Bob Shadwick of the University of British Columbia said in a statement.

Shadwick added that lunge-feeding adaptations appear to have evolved before today's whales ballooned in size. As such, he said, "it's likely that this sensory organ ? and its role in coordinating successful lunging ? is responsible for rorquals claiming the largest-animals-on-Earth status."

Asia stocks mixed after G8 vague on Europe fix

BANGKOK (AP) ? Bargain-hunting helped Asian stock markets edge upward Monday, but gains were limited as investors remained unconvinced that the world's major economies nailed a solution to the European debt crisis following a summit in Washington.

Markets posted only muted gains as traders were kept on edge by worries about the economic future of Greece and whether it would exit the 17-country euro currency union.

A weekend summit in Washington among leaders of the world's most powerful nations provided little in the way of encouragement for investors already nervous about slowing growth in China and fears that turmoil in Europe could hit key export industries.

Leaders of the G-8 countries issued a statement calling for both painful cutbacks and growth-promoting measures to deal with a crisis that threatens the global economy. But actual steps were left up to individual countries to take.

"We saw a very weak statement out of the G-8," said Andrew Sullivan, principal sales trader at Piper Jaffray in Hong Kong. "They probably have gone as far as they can, but the market isn't interested in statements. It's interested in action."

He said the next major market-moving event was likely to be on June 17, when Greeks elect a new government.

At stake is a multibillion euro bailout that Greece urgently needs to stay solvent. International lenders have threatened to cancel the package if Greece fails to follow through on its austerity plans.

But austerity has proven wildly unpopular among voters and led to the downfall of the prior government. Any new government that fails to enact sharp spending cuts risks being cut off from financial help that could hurtle Greece into default and toward a messy exit from the euro.

In any event, sharp selling among key Asian indexes last week presented bargain-hunting opportunities. Japan's Nikkei 225 index came off four-month lows to rise 0.3 percent at 8,636.89. Nishimatsu Construction Co. added 3.9 percent and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. rose 1.4 percent. Camera and medical equipment maker Olympus Corp. rose 1.7 percent.

Australia's S&P/ASX rose 0.2 percent to 4,055.90 as improving commodities prices helped its sizable resource sector. Energy Resources of Australia jumped 4.4 percent and BHP Billiton, the world's largest mining company, added 2 percent.

Mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index was 0.3 percent higher at 2,351.06. Benchmarks in Taiwan and India also rose. Singapore was mostly flat.

But Hong Kong's Hang Seng was down 0.3 percent at 18,893.53. Indonesia, Thailand and New Zealand benchmarks also fell.

Shares of Hong Kong-listed Alibaba.com Ltd. rose 0.2 percent a day after Yahoo Inc. announced it will sell back half of its 40 percent stake in the Chinese e-commerce group. Rising gold prices helped boost Hong Kong-listed Zijin Mining Group 3.7 percent.

Benchmark oil for June delivery was up 43 cents to $91.91 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.08 to settle at $91.48 in New York on Friday.

In currency trading, the euro rose to $1.2782 from $1.2737 late Friday in New York. The dollar rose to 79.21 yen from 79.08 yen.

Student killed, 7 hurt in blast near Italy school

ROME (AP) ? A bomb exploded outside a high school in southern Italy named after a slain anti-Mafia prosecutor as students arrived for class Saturday, killing a teenage girl and wounding several other classmates, officials said.

The device went off a few minutes before 8 a.m. in the Adriatic port town of Brindisi just as students milled outside, chatting and getting ready for class at the Morvillo-Falcone vocational institute. The school is named after the slain anti-Mafia prosecutor Giovanni Falcone and his wife, Francesca Morvillo, a judge who was also killed in the 1992 bombing in Sicily by Cosa Nostra.

One of the wounded students, a girl who was walking alongside the victim outside the school in Brindisi, was reported in critical condition after surgery. Officials said at least seven students were injured, but some news reports put the figure at 10.

Brindisi's Perrino hospital, where the wounded were taken, declined to give out information by phone.

Dr. Paola Ciannamea, a Perrino physician who helped treat the injured at the hsopital, told reporters there that one of the injured was a teenage girl who was in grave but stable condition after surgery. She added that plastic surgery was still being performed on some of the other injured, who suffered burns in the blast.

An unidentified hospital official, briefing reporters there, said the critically injured student was in stable condition after surgery and that several of the injured students had suffered burns and is undergoing plastic surgery.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility.

Italy has been marking the 20th anniversary of the Sicilian highway attack, but it was unclear if there was an organized crime link to Saturday's explosion.

In Brindisi, local civil protection agency official Fabiano Amati said a female student died of her wounds after being taken to a hospital and at least seven other students were hospitalized.

Sky TG24TV said the victim was a 16-year-old girl.

Interior Minister Anna Maria Cancellieri, in charge of domestic security, said she was "struck" by the fact that the school was named after the slain hero and his wife, but she cautioned that investigators at that point "have no elements" to blame the school attack on organized crime.

"It's not the usual (method) for the Mafia," she told Sky in a phone interview. The Sicilian-based Cosa Nostra usually targets specific figures, such as judges, prosecutors, turncoats or rival mobsters in attacks, and not civilian targets such as schools.

"The big problem now is to get intelligence" on the attack, said Cancellieri. She added that she had spoken by phone with Italian Premier Mario Monti, in the United States for the G-8 summit.

Outside the school, textbooks, their pages flipping in a breeze, notebooks and a backpack littered the street near where the bomb exploded. At the sound of the blast, students already inside the building ran outside of the school to see what happened.

Officials initially said the device was in a trash bin outside the Morvillo-Falcone school, but later ANSA, reporting from Brindisi, said the device, consisting of three cooking-gas canisters, a detonator and possibly a timer, had been placed on a low wall ringing the school. The wall was damaged and charred from the blast.

Public high schools in Italy hold classes on Saturday mornings.

A school official, Valeria Vitale, told Sky that most of the pupils were females. The school specializes in training for jobs in fashion and social services, she said.

The bombing also follows a number of attacks against Italian officials and government or public buildings by a group of anarchists, which prompted authorities to assign bodyguards for 550 individuals and deploy 16,000 law enforcement officers nationwide.

Minister Cancellieri indicated that after the school blast, authorities' sense of what could be a possible target had been tested.

"Anything now could be a 'sensitive' target," she said.

Austerity measures, spending cuts and new and higher taxes, all part of economist Monti's plan to save Italy from succumbing to the debt crisis roiling Greece, have angered many citizens, and social tensions have ratcheted up.

"The economic crisis doesn't help," Cancellieri said, referring to the tensions.

Brindisi is a lively port town in Puglia, the region in the southeastern "heel" of the Italian boot-shaped peninsula. An organized crime syndicate known as the Sacred United Crown, has been traditionally active there, but crackdowns have been widely considered by authorities to have lessened the organization's power in the region.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - World stocks fell for a fifth day and Brent oil prices dropped 2 percent on Thursday on concerns about the health of Spain's banks and the prospect of Greece leaving the euro zone.

Adding to pressure on Wall Street stocks was a U.S. government report showing manufacturing in the mid-Atlantic states unexpectedly contracted in May. The Standard & Poor's 500 <.spx> index finished at a four-month low.

The data helped lift safe-haven U.S. Treasuries prices and pushed the 10-year note yield to its lowest in more than seven months, while the yen climbed against the euro and dollar.

Worries about Spanish banks resurfaced after a media report said customers of Bankia had withdrawn more than 1 billion euros from their accounts in the past week. The Spanish government said there had been no such exit of deposits.

The developments in Spain followed reports that customers of Greek banks were moving funds on the belief the country would exit the euro, adding to broader anxiety about the region's debt crisis.

After the U.S. market close, Moody's Investors Service cut the long-term and deposit ratings of 16 Spanish banks, including Banco Santander .

"The whole equities market is being driven by a macro trade based upon contagion fear in Europe, and really the problem is undercapitalized banks there," said Jack de Gan, chief investment officer at Harbor Advisory Corp in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Global shares, as measured by MSCI's world equity index <.miwd00000pus>, dropped 1 percent and posted in a fifth day of losses, along with U.S. stocks.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> ended down 156.06 points, or 1.24 percent, at 12,442.49. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was down 19.94 points, or 1.51 percent, at 1,304.86. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was down 60.35 points, or 2.10 percent, at 2,813.69.

U.S. data also showed new claims for U.S. jobless benefits last week held at levels suggesting sluggish growth in hiring.

Caterpillar Inc dropped 4.5 percent to $87.77 and was the biggest drag on the Dow after the heavy equipment company's dealers reported slowing sales for April.

After the U.S. close, Facebook Inc priced its initial public offering at $38 per share, valuing the world's largest social network at more than $100 billion. [ID:nL1E8GHEO9] The stock begins trading Friday on the Nasdaq.

European shares also dropped. The pan-European FTSE 300 index <.fteu3> ended down 1.2 percent, a fourth straight day of declines.

"The oil market, like other risky assets, is within the grips of uncertainty surrounding the euro zone," said Harry Tchilinguirian, BNP Paribas head of commodities strategy.

The euro had also fallen to a four-month low versus the dollar but recovered by early afternoon to trade slightly higher on the day.

Treasury prices climbed. Yields on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note fell to their lowest levels in more than seven months and were within striking distance of 1.67 percent, the lowest yield in at least 60 years.

"Treasuries continue to be the haven of choice for a spooked market," said Gennadiy Goldberg, fixed-income strategist at 4Cast Ltd in New York.

Gold prices also rose, with spot gold registering its largest one-day gain since late January.

Spot gold bounced more than 2.6 percent to an intraday high of $1,579.70 and was last up 2.36 percent at $1,575.5 per ounce.

That is up almost $50 since gold plunged to around $1,527 on Wednesday, its lowest level since December.

The decrease in revenue was attributed primarily the loss of access lines, but largely offset by increased equipment sales and growth from video, business data and high-speed internet services (HSI).

Consumer HSI subscribers increased 2.7% year-over-year to 85,500, driven by video bundle sales and enhancements to the broadband network.

Excluding a one-time $5.1 million loss on early extinguishment of debt in connection with the successful refinancing effort completed in the first quarter of 2012, the company generated net income of $5.3 million compared to $5.5 million in the quarter ending December 2011.

Overall, Hawaiian Telcom reported revenues reached $97.6 million, a 1% decrease from a year ago, when it was $98.5 million for the first quarter.

According to a media release from the Mayo Clinic earlier today, ?Alterations to the ?on-off? switches of genes occur early in the development of prostate cancer and could be used as biomarkers to detect the disease months or even years earlier than current approaches.?

The relevant research paper has ? supposedly ?? just been published on line in the journal Clinical Cancer Research, and of course the first critical question it raises is whether the ability to use the relevant biomarkers (DNA methylation profiles) can help us to distinguish with accuracy between cancers that are indolent and which will never need treatment and cancers which have the potential to metastasize. Alas, as yet there is no sign of the abstract of the paper on the web site of the journal!

According to this release:

• The authors studied the DNA methylation profiles of 14,495 genes from prostate cancers in 238 patients, including

  • Genes from men whose cancer recurred locally after first-line treatment
  • Genes from men whose cancer metastasized
• DNA methylation changes observed during the earliest stages of prostate cancer development were nearly identical in all patients.
• The authors identified ?distinct? alterations in patterns of DNA methylation that could be used to distinguish between indolent and more aggressive tumors.

The senior author, Krishna Donenka, PhD, is quoted as saying that, ?Our approach is more accurate and reliable than the widely used PSA ? test,? but then any new test had better be significantly better that the current PSA test, so that?s only step one toward a test that can really revolutionize the diagnosis and management of prostate cancer.

At least DNA methylation change would be prostate cancer specific ? which of course the PSA test is not.

DNA methylation of specific genes is an increasingly well-understood process by which the body controls whether particular genes are turned ?off? or turned ?on? at a particular point in time. It is not the only process that affects the degree of expression of a particular gene ? but it is very certainly an important one.

Apparently, Adobe took notice to its customers' dissatisfaction and updated its initial blog post with a changed tune, stating, "We are in the process of resolving these vulnerabilities in Adobe Photoshop CS5.x, and will update this Security Bulletin once the patch is available." The same is true for both Illustrator and Flash. This kerfuffle started after Adobe handed out warnings for eight "critical" vulnerabilities found in certain versions of the three applications -- some of which are said to be exploitable and could potentially be used to "take control of the affected system." The whole bottom of the phone rotates, switching from a full QWERTY keyboard, to a set of dedicated music controls. In messaging mode the keypad is angled out on a chin to make typing easier, while keeping the screen in a better position for visibility -- it wasn't the greatest display, easily getting washed out at even slight angles under the conventions center's lights. Give it a twist (hence the name) and the keyboard gets stuck to the rear, exposing a pair of stereo speakers and a set of controls to raise and lower the volume, skip tracks and, of course, play and pause your tunes. Otherwise, the bulky and plasticky handset holds little allure, but we'll cheers Nyx Mobile for their special twist on the MP3 phone. Check out the gallery below for a few pics.

LTE-equipped Samsung Galaxy S III coming to TELUS in Canada

Following the phone's unveiling in London last week, Canadian carrier TELUS is the first North American mobile network to reveal that it'll be carrying the LTE version of Samsung's new Galaxy S III. TELUS says the phone will be available "in time for the summer," which fits with the June timeframe that Samsung has marked for the Galaxy S III's U.S. launch.

TELUS says it isn't offering any details on pricing or specifications just yet, which leads us to believe that the device it'll offer may differ somewhat from what we saw in London last week. That's to be expected, however, and we've already heard plenty of reports suggesting a different chip may power the LTE version of the Galaxy S III.

Nevertheless, it's good news for Canadians on TELUS, though with no mention of any exclusivity deal, we wouldn't be surprised to see other Canadian carriers declaring their interest in the device in the days and weeks ahead. How Does UK Income Tax Work? | Business

Every person in the UK gets a certain amount of tax free allowance each tax year. This means that you don?t pay tax on this amount of your earnings. For the 2012/13 tax year which started on April 6th, the standard tax free allowance (also known as your personal allowance) is ?8,105.

If you earn less than this then you won?t pay any tax. You pay tax on anything above this amount and the percentage you pay will depend on your income level. This handy tax calculator is perfect for checking how much tax you will pay based on your income.

For an income level of ?0-?34,370 you would pay 20% tax on anything over ?8,105 ? this is known as the basic rate.

Higher rate tax is chargeable at 40% and is deducted on any earnings that fall between ?34,371 and ?150,000. This is in addition to the 20% payable between ?0 and ?34,370.

Additional rate tax is a whopping 50% and this is charged on any earnings over ?150,000. Again, this would be in addition to the higher and basic rate band deductions.

There are also a number of increases available to your personal allowance depending on age and circumstance. Here?s a quick breakdown of the extras:

• Aged 65-74. If you are between these ages, then your personal allowance rises from ?8,105 to ?10,500.
• Aged 75+. If you are over 75 then you get an extra increase of ?160 to ?10,660.
• Blind persons allowance. If you are registered as blind, then an additional ?2,100 is added to your total personal allowance amount.

Other tax free allowances are available for married couple over a certain age, and some people are exempt from making National Insurance contributions, which increases their net income.

There are of course exceptions to these income tax rules, which is why using an income tax calculator is a good way to check what your actual personal allowance is. If your income level is over ?100,000 (or over ?25,400 for people aged 65+) then your personal allowance can actually be decreased by ?1 for every ?2 over the limit you are.

Another thing to take into consideration when trying to work out your income tax, NI and net pay is whether or not you pay into a pension, have childcare vouchers through your employer, or earn enough to repay your student loan.
