Most fruit spread samples in Canada do not contain undeclared sulphites: Study

FBR Staff Writer Published 17 August 2012

A study conducted by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's (CFIA) revealed that 94% of fruit spread samples tested did not contain undeclared sulphites.

As part of the CFIA routine testing of various food products, about 48 fruit spreads (butters, jams, jellies, marmalades and preserves) were taken from retail stores in 2010-2011, and were analyzed for undeclared sulphites.

The study found that 94% of fruit spread samples tested did not contain undeclared sulphites.

About three samples (i.e. 6%) contained sulphites. One product was determined to pose a health risk and was immediately recalled. The sulphite levels in the other two products were considered to be safe for human consumption.

Sulphites are often added to foods as a preservative to prevent spoilage and/or to maintain colour. They could also be present due to cross contamination during food production.

While not a health concern for most consumers, sulphites can cause a serious reaction in consumers with a sulphite sensitivity.

New Apple Store ?prototype? in Palo Alto has massive bandwidth for live video

Apple is building a new store in the heart of Silicon Valley with an extremely high-bandwidth connection to one of the Internet?s major hubs.

With the store, Apple will be trying out a ?new prototype? of its retail environment, according to documents filed with the architectural review board in Palo Alto, Calif., where the store is located. Along with the familiar all-glass storefront and the prominent use of stone, the new store will include interior trees and a skylight.

It will also be linked to one of the busiest and highest-capacity access points on the Internet, the?Palo Alto Internet Exchange (PAIX), which will give Apple the ability to demonstrate bandwidth-hungry services ? such as live, streaming video ? to hundreds of individual customers at a time.

Photographs of the building site at 340 University Ave. in Palo Alto, as well as construction documents filed with the city of Palo Alto, strongly suggest the company?s plans. None of the public documents name Apple, and the storefront does not yet carry the company?s name, but multiple strands of evidence point towards the site?s ultimate tenant being Apple.

  • The architectural firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, which submitted the architectural review for the site in 2010, has designed many Apple stores around the world.
  • At the time of the architectural review, Palo Alto city officials were convinced Apple would be the store?s ultimate tenant, based on the details of the application. ?It was clear, when they said where the sign was going to go and when they talked about the project details, who the tenant would be,? an architectural review board member said, according to Palo Alto Online in 2010. ?It was just really obvious.?
  • The construction firm overseeing the remodel of the site is DPR Construction, which also built Apple?s flagship store in downtown San Francisco.

As for the location, it?s just one block from the current Palo Alto Apple store. But the new location is just around the corner from PAIX, on Bryant Street. Located in the old ?Telephone Co. Building,? PAIX is an interconnection point for Internet service providers including Equinix, Bell Telephone Canada, and others. Although crowded, this site still offers massive pipes for anyone who needs to send and receive a lot of data and wants to get its equipment close to the Internet?s major backbones. For instance, Facebook is a PAIX tenant.

PAIX is a high-security facility, whose windows have been replaced with opaque barriers. Guards and surveillance cameras guard the site. Behind PAIX and adjacent to the new retail storefront is a large private switching facility for AT&T.

Notably, the current construction connects the Apple store (or whatever it is) with both PAIX and the AT&T building. Plans filed with the city of Palo Alto call for a pedestrian tunnel, presumably leading between the Apple store and the telco facilities next to it.

Why would Apple need such high-bandwidth neighbors for its ?prototype? store? Well, one explanation is that it wants to give the best possible showing to new video services, such as a revamped Apple TV. The company was recently reported to be negotiating with cable companies to offer them an Apple-made set-top box that would work with cable services, and it?s reportedly building a Apple TV that will blur the distinction between live and on-demand video.

But what if Apple decided to offer an Apple TV that worked with its own internet service, bypassing the cable providers that have so far rebuffed it? It certainly has the data centers and high-bandwidth server centers capable of delivering live video; it?s long been a leader in streaming video over the internet.

If you were showing off video services to an eager public, you?d want to make extra sure that your storefront had the best, most reliable, highest-bandwidth connections to the Internet. In other words, you?d want to make those connections as close to major interconnection points as possible.

340 University Ave. would be a very good location indeed.

A dramatic glass storefront is planned for the Apple store at 340 University, in Palo Alto, California. Source: Palo Alto Online

Could this be the rumored new Apple store in downtown Palo Alto, Calif.? It's got a glass front and is completely concealed by construction fabric. Maybe.

DPR Construction is the listed contractor on this Palo Alto building site. It's a construction firm that Apple has used before.

If you look down the alley next to the construction site, you can see that it extends to the neighboring building, as if the two are being connected to each other.

PAIX is housed in the old "Telephone Co. Building" in Palo Alto. Its windows have been replaced by opaque barriers and is protected by surveillance cameras and guards.

That building behind the new store is the "Telephone Co. Building," renovated in 1991. This building is the home of PAIX, the Palo Alto Internet Exchange, a major interconnection point for the Internet.

PAIX, the Palo Alto Internet Exchange, is home to rack after rack of switches and network cables, used by telcos and ISPs that need high-bandwidth connections to the Internet.

Walk further and you see that the construction curtain continues from the "old telephone building" to the current AT&T building, which is next door. It certainly suggests that whatever is being built at that storefront, it needs to be connected to PAIX and to AT&T.

A Google Maps satellite view shows the location of the mystery store, which appears to be a new prototype Apple Store, as well as an AT&T facility and PAIX

Archers take aim at national titles

The 2012 Canadian Archery Championships at Juan de Fuca will be a real learning experience for Victoria?s Diana Kaun.

She only started the sport in 2011 and this weekend she will rub shoulders with some of the best, including 2012 London Olympian Marie-Pier Beaudet from Quebec City and 2011 world men?s compound champion Chris Perkins of Athens, Ont.

?This is my first major competition and I just want to take it all in and have fun,?? said the 47-year-old Kaun. ?I hope to learn as much as I can.

?Archery was something that I always wanted to do. I took my first lesson in May [2011] with my husband Brian and really liked it. We then joined the Victoria Bowmen Club.??

Kaun has started to make some noise on the B.C. scene, winning the B.C. Indoor title for senior women?s recurve (a type of bow) in Cranbrook. ?I was pretty nervous at Cranbrook and nobody was more surprised than I was.??

She followed that up with a silver medal at the Canada Cup in Burnaby.

?To be successful at archery, your entire body has to be working together,?? said Kaun. ?When you make a good shot, you want to reproduce it over and over, just like a golfer.??

The three-day target portion of the championship starts today at 10 a.m. There are 200-plus shooters, ranging in age from under 12 to over 50, including 16 members from the United States Junior Development Team. The divisions are Pre-Cub, Cub, Cadet, Junior, Senior and Masters.

Kaun will shoot a total of 144 arrows today, from 70, 60, 50 and 30 metres. On Saturday, she will fire another 144 from 70 metres. The results from those two rounds will set up the seedings for Sunday?s elimination round. During the knockout competition, each archer shoots three arrows and the winner is awarded two points. The first person to six points advances to the next round.

Marriage Counselling ? Why Would You? | Sam Owen's ...

You?re having relationship problems.? You?re in a crappy place.? We can say it as it is, we?re adults.? In this crappy place you feel bad about your relationship, bad about yourself, are finding that your personal life, work life, health and/or social life are suffering as a consequence.? Do you want to stay there indefinitely?? No.? Of course you don?t.

Save My Marriage

Many of my relationship counselling type clients come to me when they are unsure as to whether or not they think the marriage/relationship is salvageable or not.? They may come with different agendas, one may want to work it out whilst the other may not, and others come singing from the same hymn sheet, the ?save my marriage? one.? Of course there are also those who feel so stuck and in a state of shock about their situation that they do not know how to even process what is happening.

Why Couples Use Relationship Coaching

There are lots of reasons why a couple might come to see me for relationship coaching?

  • perhaps he had an affair,
  • perhaps she has neglected his needs for a long time,
  • perhaps the arrival of the newborn baby has overwhelmed them,
  • perhaps they have stopped communicating,
  • he may have began distrusting her,
  • they may have drifted apart over time and live separate lives,
  • she may feel that there is an imbalance in the relationship,
  • he may be fed up that there is no intimacy or a lacking sex life,
  • she may be having doubts as to whether this relationship will last forever,
  • he may be having mental health problems that are affecting their relationship,
  • she may have low self-esteem after considerable post-baby weight gain,
  • they may both have the same complaints,

?and so the list goes on.

If you have read this list up to here, chances are, you are in a similar situation to one of the many people that seek out professional help to save a relationship.? Why would you, though?

You should first try to resolve whatever it is, yourselves.? There?s no need to seek help from a professional if you can remedy your relationship yourselves, and I sincerely hope that you can.? Maybe you can talk to your family and friends. ?Perhaps you can openly tell them everything you want to say, everything you?ve been going through behind closed doors.? Maybe you find that the strangers in online forums provide you with the relationship advice and insightful guidance you need to move forward towards a mended relationship.? Maybe a support group can help you.? Do have a look; it may be just what you need.? Perhaps a self-help book will be you saving grace.

If, however, these are not options for you, or you?ve already exhausted them, then the time comes for you to make a decision: is your relationship or marriage worth saving?? Is it?? Are you sure?? Then perhaps it?s time to take the first step and find out if relationship counselling/coaching is for you.

Getting The Right Relationship Help

Search for someone you feel has the right credentials, ethics and personality to suit you and your needs.? You get a feeling about these things when you are checking out different professionals.? You don?t have to go with someone just because they were recommended to you, if you don?t feel you connect properly with them.? You don?t have to pick someone because they call themselves this, that and the other and say they provide every therapy under the sun.? You don?t have to choose someone because they are the closest to your home.? You do need to choose someone that you feel can help you and your relationship, and that you are comfortable with and get a good gut feeling about.? Make the right decisions for you and your partner; I trust that you know that right decision deep down.? Just follow it.

SMS Marketing Strategies are almost too simple! For some reason we like things much better if they are very complicated! In fact, it seems as though the more complicated something is the more we consider it to be the ?state of the art!?

In marketing your Business, there are so many moving parts! We tend to think that if we are busy doing something we are ?building our business?. That is why it is so important to measure your activity. To ask ?Is this producing any new business?? By the way, New Business could be helping a Client with a New Project. But this subject is for another post.

In this post, we are discussing SMS Marketing.

SMS stands for?Simple?(or Short)?Message System.?It is a Text Message.

We are now using SMS more than phone calls. Typically, we ?open? (read) a Text Message in three (3) minutes or less. Compared with email, usually 48 hours (if ever), SMS Messaging is the quiet, unsung ?Champion? of Marketing.

The secret to SMS Messaging is to integrate it into Your existing Marketing efforts. This integration is paramount! Look at this:

One of the greatest challenges of introducing a new marketing channel into your business?s marketing plan is integrating it with your current marketing efforts. Many business marketers worry about their marketing programs becoming too thin and thereby diluting the reach of their marketing efforts as a whole. It?s an understandable concern. But here?s the secret:?text message marketing can be supplemental rather than incremental. In short, SMS really shines when it is used to support an existing marketing campaign?.More at?Integrating?SMS?into Existing?Marketing?Efforts

As it is with anything new, incorporation is difficult. ?That is not how we did it before!? This mantra has been the death of many endeavors!

SMS Marketing Trends are indicating that Text Messaging is the way to improve Your Business Marketing and Sales, in a very short period of time.?Instead of weeks or months using traditional marketing techniques, SMS Messaging can dramatically affect Your Business in hours, if not minutes! It is well worth the time and effort to set it up!

What are we really trying to do with our marketing effort? Is it not an effort to improve the sales of out business?

Here is a secret SMS Marketing Tip: Your Business will improve their sales far more by ?taking care? of their existing clients than by always working on getting new clients! That is why SMS Marketing is so important to Your Business!

Wellcome Film of the Month: Get Fit! ? Wellcome Trust Blog

This jaunty black and white public health film sponsored by the British Medical Association (BMA) aims to encourage the audience to use the National Eye Service, an organisation aimed at providing eye testing for people with low incomes. It provides an example of the BMA?s involvement in promoting public health at that time.

The film takes a very surprising approach to communicate this initiative: most of the film is occupied with a patriotic, stirring homage to the ?Great Keep Fit Movement?. Its opens with widespread dismay at the nation?s health and fitness at the time, communicated by the alarmist newspaper headline, ?NATIONAL HEALTH, GRAVE ANXIETY?.

Britain in 1937 was recovering from the Great Depression (at least in the South East) with a boom in house building, expanding manufacturing and more jobs as a consequence of re-armament in response to the rise of Nazi Germany. Greater prosperity meant increased disposable income and leisure time; a dramatized conversation is overheard between elderly gentlemen playing dominoes (possibly in a public house), one smoking a pipe. The other man speaks enthusiastically (but with no irony) about the solution to our health; get more ?h-exercise?! Through various media (newspapers, radio, movies), the message to ?get fit!? is promoted.

Eyes Right! was made a year after the 1936 summer Olympics were held in Munich, Germany. The spectacle of the games (particularly the mass displays) would have been familiar to cinema audiences of 1937 from newsreels shown at the time. Hitler commissioned a film about the Olympics by Leni Riefenstahl, Olympia, which was released in 1938. It is still regarded as being a cinema classic, although Riefenstahl?s involvement in National Socialism undermined its artistic credibility.

Eyes Right! makes use of the cinematic device of a film within a film. A cinema audience is shown a short sequence from a (presumably fictional) cinemagazine [PDF] ?Health Series No. 1?. The Keep Fit Movement is demonstrated by mass calisthenics by nimble men, women and children over a number of outdoor public displays. Calisthenics were widely believed to strengthen muscles, provide a cardiovascular workout as well as promote discipline. The participants wear jumpers with ?Fitness Wins? emblazoned across them.

The narrator introduces Dr G. C. Anderson, medical secretary of the BMA, who says that one of the most important aspects of general health is the wellbeing of the eyes. An attractive young woman is then seen visiting her doctor, who recommends she visits an eye specialist at the National Eye Service. She goes on to be fitted with a pair of spectacles.

Eyes Right! has recently been used as part of the Wellcome Trust supported Fidget Project by London Arts in Health Forum (LAHF). This project consists of a touring stage reminiscent of a carousel with stations illustrating how our activity levels have changed over the decades as we have become more sedentary. The Fidget Project is currently touring the UK and you can see venues and dates on the project website.
