NRA uses Justice memo to accuse Obama on guns

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The National Rifle Association is using a Justice Department memo it obtained to argue in ads that the Obama administration believes its gun control plans won't work unless the government seizes firearms and requires national gun registration ? ideas the White House has not proposed and does not support.

The NRA's assertion and its obtaining of the memo in the first place underscore the no-holds-barred battle under way as Washington's fight over gun restrictions heats up.

The memo, under the name of one of the Justice Department's leading crime researchers, critiques the effectiveness of gun control proposals, including some of President Barack Obama's. A Justice Department official called the memo an unfinished review of gun violence research and said it does not represent administration policy.

The memo says requiring background checks for more gun purchases could help, but also could lead to more illicit weapons sales. It says banning assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines produced in the future but exempting those already owned by the public, as Obama has proposed, would have limited impact because people now own so many of those items.

It also says that even total elimination of assault weapons would have little overall effect on gun killings because assault weapons account for a limited proportion of those crimes.

The nine-page document says the success of universal background checks would depend in part on "requiring gun registration," and says gun buybacks would not be effective "unless massive and coupled with a ban."

The administration has not proposed gun registration, buybacks or banning all firearms. But gun registration and ownership curbs are hot-button issues for the NRA and other gun-rights groups, which strenuously oppose the ideas.

Whether to require record-keeping for private gun sales is holding up a congressional compromise on legislation to expand background checks, now required only for transactions by federally licensed dealers, according to people familiar with bipartisan Senate talks who spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks are private.

Justice Department and White House officials declined to provide much information about the memo or answer questions about it on the record.

The memo has the look of a preliminary document and calls itself "a cursory summary" and assessment of gun curb initiatives. The administration has not release it officially.

But the NRA has posted the memo on one of its websites and cites it in advertising aimed at whipping up opposition to Obama's efforts to contain gun violence. The ad says the paper shows that the administration "believes that a gun ban will not work without mandatory gun confiscation" and thinks universal background checks "won't work without requiring national gun registration" ? ideas the president has not proposed or expressed support for.

"Still think President Obama's proposals sound reasonable?" Chris W. Cox, the NRA's chief Washington lobbyist, says in the ad.

Last month, White House spokesman Jay Carney said none of Obama's proposals "would take away a gun from a single law-abiding American." Other administration officials have said their plans would not result in gun seizures or a national gun registry.

A Justice Department official who would only discuss the issue on condition of anonymity said the NRA ad misrepresents Obama's gun proposals and that the administration has never backed a gun registry or gun confiscation.

While the memo's analysis of gun curb proposals presents no new findings, it is unusual for a federal agency document to surface that raises questions about a president's plans during debate on a high-profile issue such as restricting firearms.

Obama wants to ban assault weapons and ammunition magazines exceeding 10 rounds that are produced in the future. He wants universal background checks for nearly all gun purchases. Today, checks are only mandatory on sales by federally licensed gun dealers, not transactions at gun shows or other private sales.

His plan also includes tougher federal laws against gun trafficking and straw purchases, which occur when a person legally buys a firearm but sells it to a criminal or someone else barred from owning a weapon.

Interest in the gun issue has intensified since the December shootings in Newtown, Conn., that killed 20 first-graders and six staffers at an elementary school. The Democratic-led Senate Judiciary Committee plans to write legislation addressing some of Obama's proposals in the next week or two.

The NRA's Cox declined to say how his organization obtained the memo.

He said the commercial is running online in 15 states, including many Republican-leaning states where Democrats will defend Senate seats next year, such as Alaska, Arkansas, Louisiana, Montana, North Carolina, South Dakota and West Virginia. There are also ads in papers in five states.

The memo was written under the name of Greg Ridgeway, acting director of the National Institute of Justice, the Justice Department's research arm. It is dated Jan. 4, nearly two weeks before Obama announced his plan for restricting guns, and Ridgeway's first day as acting chief.

Justice Department officials said Ridgeway was not granting interviews. He came to the institute last July from the RAND Corporation, a nonprofit research institution where he studied criminal justice issues, and has a Ph.D. in statistics.

The memo says straw purchases and gun thefts are the largest sources of firearms used in crimes, and that such transactions "would most likely become larger if background checks at gun shows and private sellers were addressed."

Gun control supporters said the NRA ad and the Justice memo don't mention that the current federal background check system blocked gun sales to 2.1 million criminals and others barred from owning guns between 1994, when the checks began, and 2010. Also ignored is that Obama has proposed cracking down on straw purchases to prevent a growth in illegal transactions, they said.

Advocates of restricting guns also said the memo omitted mention of several studies that affirm the effectiveness of firearms curbs. These include a 2010 police group analysis showing more than one-third of police departments found increased criminal use of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines since the 2004 expiration of the ban on those items.

"It doesn't appear to be a serious discussion of gun violence prevention policy, never mind an expression of administration policy," said Joshua Horwitz, executive director of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence.

The memo says that out of 11,000 annual gun homicides, an average of 35 deaths yearly are from mass shootings, defined as those with four or more victims.

"Policies that address the larger firearm homicide issue will have a far greater impact even if they do not address the particular issues of mass shootings," it says.

It says there were an estimated 1.5 million assault weapons before the 10-year ban on those firearms began in 1994, so their sheer number would weaken a new ban exempting existing weapons. Such guns accounted for just 2 percent to 8 percent of crimes before the 1994 ban, so eliminating assault weapons "would not have a large impact on gun homicides," the memo said.

Recent data on the assault weapons ban impact is scarce because since the 1990s, Congress has blocked most federal research on the effect that firearms have on public health. As part of the gun restrictions Obama proposed last month, he ordered federal scientific agencies to research gun violence.

Whether layoff affects one or 100, use solid business reasons to ...

Sometimes, all it takes to cure a budget shortfall is to cut one position. As a business move, doing so is just as valid as conducting a much larger layoff. As long as you can show the change was based on business needs, you won?t lose a discrimination case.

Recent case: Beverly worked in housekeeping as a supervisor at a nursing home. She also served temporarily as maintenance director while the nursing home was searching for a permanent director. She then returned to her old position.

When Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements fell, the nursing home had to cut costs.

Because it had been getting complaints about cleanliness and morale, it decided eliminating Beverly?s job would save the most money while causing the least operational dis?ruption. She was terminated in what the nursing home called a reduction in force. She was 59 years old.

She sued, alleging age discrimination. She argued that there is no such thing as a RIF of one. By her reasoning, she had really been cut because of her age and the nursing home shouldn?t be allowed to argue that it carried out a RIF.

The court disagreed. It said a RIF doesn?t have to involve more than one employee. If the economics only require one position to be cut, that?s still a legitimate RIF. (Alferink v. Manor Care, No. 1:11-CV-2359, ND OH, 2012)

Final note: Economic reasons are almost always a winning termination strategy.

Army sequestration cuts could affect 17,000 jobs in Georgia

(ATLANTA BUSINESS CHRONICLE) -- If automatic budget cuts of sequestration go into effect, Georgia would see an impact on 17,163 jobs and lose $931 million from its economy, according to a statement from the U.S. Army.?

Impacts on jobs include federal employee furloughs and layoffs, reductions in the contracted workforce because of reduced military investments and construction, and reductions in base operation support, reported an affiliate of the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the Washington Business Journal.

Economic impacts would be the result of sequestration and restrictions on new programs that come with the continuing resolution to fund the government, WBJ reported. ?

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? A 26-year-old man was being sought Sunday as the prime suspect in a pre-dawn shooting on the Las Vegas Strip last week which led to a fiery crash that left three people dead and several others injured.

Las Vegas police Capt. Chris Jones said Sunday that investigators are working around the clock to sort through evidence and find Ammar Harris following the discovery Saturday of a black SUV used as a getaway car in the shooting and six-vehicle chain-reaction carnage on the neon-lit boulevard near the Bellagio, Caesars Palace, Bally's and Flamingo resorts.

Jones cited "lots of information coming at us all at once, especially on the Range Rover." He wasn't specific.

An aspiring rapper driving a Maserati was shot to death Thursday, and two people in a taxi died in a crash and fireball when the Maserati hit their vehicle.

Harris, who police said was arrested last year on allegations that he was a pimp, was named Saturday as the prime suspect in the triple homicide. Jones said police didn't know where he was.

Police released a jail photo of Harris taken following his arrest in Las Vegas last year on pandering, kidnapping, sexual assault and coercion charges. The disposition of that case was not immediately known.

Harris sometimes goes by the name Ammar Asim Faruq Harris, police said. The photo shows him with tattoos on his right cheek and words on his neck above an image that appeared to depict an owl with blackened eyes. Jones warned that Harris should be considered armed and dangerous.

Police had been searching for the black Range Rover, with blackout windows and distinctive black rims, since it was last seen speeding away from the shooting. It was located at a gated apartment complex a couple of blocks east of the Strip, and was impounded as evidence.

Kenneth Wayne Cherry Jr., was mortally wounded when the dark gray Maserati he was driving was peppered by gunfire from the SUV. Taxi driver Michael Boldon and passenger Sandra Sutton-Wasmund, of Maple Valley, Wash., died in the taxi.

Boldon, 62, was a family man who moved from Michigan to Las Vegas. Sutton-Wasmund, 48, was a businesswoman and mother of three.

A passenger in the Maserati was wounded in the arm and four people from four other vehicles were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The Maserati passenger has not been identified, and police said he was cooperating with investigators.

The blink-of-an-eye chain of events had family members and friends in Las Vegas, California, Michigan and Washington mourning the dead this weekend.

"My son was a good boy," Kenneth Cherry Sr. told reporters in a Saturday news conference convened by Las Vegas lawyers Vicki Greco and Robert Beckett.

Beckett said they wanted to respond to rumors that the 27-year-old son ? who produced a rap video using the name Kenny Clutch ? was a gangster and a troublemaker. The attorneys had represented his son, an unmarried father of three, and now represent his estate and family.

"My son was a victim just like the two people in that taxi," Cherry Sr. said. "Trouble found him. The people in the taxicab, trouble found them."

Court records show Cherry had no criminal cases or convictions in Las Vegas, and police said there was no record of arrests

The Clark County coroner determined that Kenny Cherry died Thursday of at least one gunshot to the chest. The deaths of Cherry, Boldon and Sutton-Wasmund were ruled homicides.

Police say the shooting appeared to stem from an argument at the valet area of the upscale Aria resort-casino about a block south of the crash scene. The shooting happened after a night featuring Morocco-born rapper French Montana at Aria nightclub Haze.

Cherry's parents live in Emeryville, Calif., and the father said his son's body would be taken back to Oakland. He said his son started a music career there and was recognized by other rappers within a West Coast hip-hop strain called hyphy.

But Chuck Creekmur, chief executive of AllHipHop.com, said Cherry wasn't well-known in wider music circles.

Kenny Clutch's YouTube music video, "Stay Schemin," shows scenes of Las Vegas Strip hotels as he sings about paying $120,000 for his Maserati.

"One mistake change lives all in one night," he raps in one verse.

Kenneth Cherry Sr., who said he runs a cellphone business, said he helped his son make payments on the Maserati. He said he last spoke with his son on Wednesday, when they talked about the high cost of the son's cellphone use.

Cherry Sr. described his son as an entrepreneur but didn't say how he made money or if he had jobs other than his music production.

Boldon's family in Las Vegas was struggling to cope with his death, said Tehran Boldon, the taxi driver's younger brother.

Boldon's sister, Carolyn Jean Trimble, said Boldon was a father, a grandfather and a car race enthusiast who drove a Mercedes when he wasn't in a cab. He owned a clothing store in Detroit and worked at a car dealership, his sister said, and drove taxis after moving to Las Vegas about 1? years ago.

The irony that a man with a taste for beautiful cars was killed by a sports car wasn't lost on Trimble.

"He would be tickled to death: 'Damn, of all things, a Maserati hit me, took me out like that,'" she said. "I'm happy he didn't suffer."

In Washington, Sutton-Wasmund co-owned a dress shop, said Debbie Tvedt, the office manager for a Maple Valley plumbing company that Sutton-Wasmund started with her husband, James Wasmund. Sutton-Wasmund was in Las Vegas attending a trade show with her business partner.

"It's a big loss," Tvedt said in a telephone interview with AP.

The Maple Valley-Black Diamond Chamber of Commerce website said Sutton-Wasmund was a board member from 2004 to 2011 before becoming a marketing representative.

A phone message left for James Wasmund was not immediately returned.

The famously glowing, always-open Las Vegas Strip was closed for some 15 hours after the crash. Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Eric Kemmer recalled a similarly long closure after the 1996 drive-by slaying of rapper Tupac Shakur.

That shooting ? involving assailants opening fire on Shakur's luxury sedan from a vehicle on Flamingo Road ? happened about a block away from Thursday's crash.

The Shakur killing has never been solved.

Tani Brown: On the Examination of Love

The ancient Greeks had four words for love. They are storge (familial love), philia (friendship love), agape (selfless love), and eros (intimate love). By contrast, the Buddhist tradition teaches the four Brahmaviharas or the four immeasurables: metta (loving kindness), karuna, (compassion), mudita (sympathetic joy), and upekkha (equanimity). The former are types of affection. By contrast, the latter are attitudes towards affection.

I'm not going to dwell on the anxieties of modern dating like texting, facebooking, and catfishing because it's hard enough just to be myself these days. I'd like to examine the spark that happens in those precious moments when I've met another person that for whatever reason grabbed my unwavering and unconditional affection. The sticky parts, the moments that take real courage to confront this overwhelming feeling I had never felt before.

Love.

This stickiness is beautifully articulated in Gus Van Sant's 1997 film, Good Will Hunting. In the film, Matt Damon plays Will Hunting -- a brilliant but haunted janitor at MIT. It is discovered early on in the film that Will is a mathematical genius when he casually but anonymously solves a complex math problem while cleaning a classroom one night. After a run-in with the law, Will is given the opportunity to avoid jail time by joining MIT's math department and seeing a therapist, the recently widowed Sean (Robin Williams).

As their relationship develops, it is revealed that Will is afraid to explore the complexities and risks of his personal relationships. Will goes through what we all go through -- breaking down the walls built up by childhood trauma and life-changing events which forever shape our conception of love.

The film reaches its pinnacle in a scene in which Sean chides Will over his immaturity and inability to love:

And if I asked you about love, you'll probably quote me a sonnet. But you've never looked at a woman and been totally vulnerable. Known someone could level you with her eyes... You don't know about real loss, because that only occurs when you love something more than you love yourself. I doubt you've ever dared to love anybody that much.

Sean posits an important question. Can I love something or someone more than I love myself? Should I love someone more than I love myself?

I've observed my understanding of love evolve over the years. When I was in college, I was madly in love with love. I saw a glimpse of both my best and my worst self, driven by the thrilling vulnerability of meeting someone that could love both the good and bad parts of me. While it was heavy, restless, and all consuming -- as Frank Ocean states, "it was, [while] some things never are." I left college with a tremendous sense of loss, thinking that my best years were behind me and privately enshrined in dorm room walls and empty playing fields.

Upon entering my twenties, that narrow interpretation of love was upstaged by the love for friends and family. I left school and met new people, the kind that look you in the eye and tell you the truth because they no longer have to worry about college formals and sorority gossip.

I learned things I thought I could only understand by being in a romantic relationship -- that loyalty and honesty could also be examined and perfected without intimacy. And I returned home, spent time with my family and remembered the value of unconditional love. It doesn't ask questions or make judgments. It welcomes you home.

Maybe the Greco-Romans were right and there are different types of love. Or perhaps the Buddhists were onto something and it is the mindful way we strive to love that is important. I think both schools speak to the notion of patience. Sitting on it. Letting those feelings wash over you. Knowing it. For me -- it is a mix of all these things. Allowing the love I have for my family and friends seep into the way I treat my partner and my faith and vice versa. Realizing they are all interconnected and requires my fullest attention and affection.

American philosopher Robert Nozick offers a possible answer to the Good Will Hunting dilemma, that is:

People encompass what they love -- it becomes part of them as its well-being becomes partly theirs. The size of a soul, the magnitude of a person, is measured in part by the extent of what that person can appreciate and love.

Maybe I will never love someone or something more than I love myself. But I certainly hope to become a part of that which I love. I wonder if 66 years ago when my grandfather Sat first laid eyes on my grandmother Akiko in Manzanar Internment Camp during World War II he asked this many questions. It seems life was simpler then. My grandmother says he was shy, but a great dancer. He eventually asked her to be his date to a camp dance and they fell in love, got married, and moved to Southern California to begin a life together.

Judging by how fast information moves these days, I wonder if I'll be as lucky as my grandfather. But maybe if time slows down just enough or I have the patience to slow it down myself, I'll continue to find a person, or people, or things that create the enduring spark called love.

Facebook to put old, rarely viewed photos into 'cold storage'

If a photo is on Facebook and no one looks at it, was it ever even uploaded?

Poor attempt at a joke aside, there's something with which we need to come to terms: There are a lot of photos on Facebook that just sit around, taking up precious data storage space. The social network can't exactly delete these photos just because no one's looking, but it can store them in a more cost-effective and energy-efficient way.

According to the Oregonian's Mike Rogoway, Facebook's testing moving what he describes as "archival posts that people don?t need every day" into cold storagein the social network's data center inPrineville, Oregon.

As fun as it might be to imagine a gigantic meatlocker full of servers, cold storage refers to a data center in which most of the computers are asleep, with a few keeping watch ? and able to wake the others ? for incoming requests to view older items. Compare that to a hot storage data center in which all the computers are wide-awake and ready to show you the information you request almost instantly. (Of course, the difference in the time it takes to grab something from cold storage versus the time it takes to grab something from hot storage is so slight that a typical user could never even tell the difference. Think second or millisecond delays, rather than anything more dramatic.)

Facebook says, according to Rogoway, that "82 percent of its traffic is focused on just 8 percent of its photos." Given that detail, it's not exactly tough to understand why the company's considering cold storage data centers ? especially since they will cost the social network about a third less than standard data centers, offer eight times more storage, and run five times more energy efficiently.

Oscar-Nominated Doc Spotlights Beauty Parlor Catering to Cancer Patients

Feb 22, 2013 7:00am

Joining the Oscar-nominated stars on the red carpet this Sunday will be two Long Island beauty salon owners, Cynthia Sansone and Rachel DeMolfetto. Sansone and DeMolfetto, who are sisters, are the subject of the Oscar-nominated short documentary ?Mondays At Racine.? The film follows the cancer patients who come to the sisters? beauty parlor once a month for a day of free beauty treatments.

The sisters came up with the idea more than 10 years ago as a way to honor their mother, who passed away from breast cancer in the 1980s.

Cynthia Sansone says that her mother initially felt like a pariah and an ?alien? after her hair fell out from her cancer treatments.

?We did not have the tools to know how to help her. I remember vividly my father walking her into the house,? said Sansone. ?The grimace on her face.?

Sansone says the idea behind the free day of beauty is to provide a support system for the cancer patients, most of whom are women, as they deal with a life-threatening illness.

?We got the script down on what we need to say to soothe and heal,? said Sansone.??No one wants to [hear], ?You look good.? People want to hear, ?What can I do???

The film?s director, Cynthia Wade, said the one common and most surprising response among the cancer patients she interviewed was that they were terrified of losing their hair. One patient even felt like she was being ?erased? as a result of her cancer treatment.

?Every single woman I spoke to said it was much easier to lose their breast than their hair,? said Wade.

Linda Hart has lived with breast cancer for nearly 19 years and has visited the Racine beauty salon once a month, every month for the last few years. In the film the 59-year-old is a striking presence as she counsels younger cancer patients and wrestles with the idea of stopping treatment altogether.

For Hart, going to the Racine salon allowed her to be open about her fears and concerns as a cancer patient and to help others going through the same thing.

?We sat and we cried and talked and laughed, and I felt like I had been there before,? said Hart, speaking about her first visit.

After living with the disease for nearly two decades, Hart says she is encouraged that more women are open about their illness in these support groups.

?Years ago people weren?t talking about, [they] held it in,? said Hart. ?Now [they let it] out. I pray it comes out even more.?

Hart, who has lost her hair, eyebrows and eyelashes to cancer treatment, has also been treated to a full make-over at the salon, providing needed ego boost.

?I really looked great. Afterwards I put the wig on, I felt like a whole person,? said Hart. ?Once I was done-up, I felt alive again.?

Berger hopes that after the Oscars, more cancer patients feel comfortable coming to the salon for a day of beauty and support.

?It?s grown into one of the most wonderful things to be a part of,? said Sansone. ?To anybody if you are diagnosed, do not feel alone. Come and talk, come be with us.?

How Your Workplace Can Speed Innovation - Business Insider

Steelcase

Picture this: A person sits alone in an office, head in hands. Fingers drum on the desktop. The clock ticks as a deadline looms. Then: "Eureka!" Cue the light bulb, the widened eyes, the "I just had a brilliant idea" music.?

As we all know, creativity doesn't always work that way. Innovation is critical when it comes to success in business, whether for a huge corporation or a tiny start-up; and more often than not, the seeds of that innovation will come from the minds of talented employees. But leaving people alone in rooms isn't the best way to spark their mad genius. (Unless, of course, they're all Steve Jobs.)

So how to achieve that "eureka" moment??These days, the most?creative professional environments encourage employees to collaborate, share, and develop ideas with their peers. And building?a workplace that fosters inspiration doesn't happen by accident.

Steelcase has been leading the charge when it comes to the importance of workplace design in driving innovation, which not only supports overall strategy and impacts the bottom line, but can also have a positive effect on employee culture. It's not a one-size-fits all approach: An office setup that energizes a team of 10 may not inspire employees at a bigger company, just as a business that uses contractors has different needs than one whose creative team is in-house.?

In a white paper entitled?"How Place Fosters Innovation," Steelcase presented eight models of innovation that tailor office spaces to companies of varying workforces, needs, and strategies.?Among them are:

The "In-House Marketplace Model"

  • Goal:?Every team and person?within the organization?from the lowliest junior staffer to the top executives?is responsible for innovation.
  • Setup: Collaboration takes place in?"neighborhoods," with a central project area for visual presentations and updates. People can move to private areas to do more focused brainstorming, or to a cafe to talk informally.

The "In-House Share Model"

  • Goal: Teams work on focused projects, sharing their information with other groups within the company.
  • Setup:?Specialized teams are grouped together, with individual workstations on the periphery.?These areas host a "front porch" for the sharing of public information, yet include private spaces for more sensitive collaborations.?

The "Partnership Model"

  • Goal:?Separate partners work on one collaborative project.
  • Setup:?Each partner has its own company space, but all share one unified space (both physically and virtually). Team members?meet, break apart to consult with experts and work in specialized labs, and convene again.

It's one thing to stay afloat in a competitive marketplace, but it's another thing to stand out. Before designing or rethinking your workplace, don't just consider what color to paint the walls and which cool chairs to buy?think about how the layout of your workplace can align with your business strategy and encourage innovation. Pretty soon, all your employees will be mad geniuses in their own right.

Find great advice for the organizational model that applies to your company in?Steelcase's?helpful white paper, "How Place Fosters Innovation."

Three Reddit True Weight Loss Stories - Diets in Review

Techies and news junkies alike have been flocking to Reddit, the social website that?s been labeled the ?front page of the internet? for its forum-style discussion on everything from current headlines to celebrity gossip.

Nestled in amongst the community?s news lovers is a growing number of health fanatics. The two most popular forums for health-conscious members are?Reddit loseit?and?Reddit Fitness, where users share their fitness tips, diet struggles, weight loss triumphs and everything in between.

A quick scour of Reddit loseit led us to several inspiring weight loss stories, one from Josh Bennet who?d lost more than 100 pounds and successfully ?unearthed? his dimples.

We reached out to Josh and two other Reddit users for an interview regarding their health transformations. Among other things, we were curious why they chose to share their stories on Reddit.

Josh, 20, of Snohomish, Washington, became somewhat of a Reddit sensation when he?shared his before and after photos of his more than 100 pound weight loss.

The photo on the left shows Josh weighing more than 310 pounds, and on the left he?s at a slim 190 pounds. To lose the weight Josh simply modified his diet to include protein, water, vegetables, and fruit, and he began incorporating cardio and weight lifting into his weekly routine.

Josh said he decided to share his weight loss story on Reddit loseit, because the site was a big source of inspiration?for him when he was trying to lose weight and he wanted to help others in the same way.

Tanner MacLean, 20, of Prince Edward Island, Canada, proudly shared his 70 pound weight loss on Reddit, which he achieved by adopting a string of new, healthy habits. In the photo on the left Tanner weighed nearly 250 pounds. On the right he?s flexing his trim 174 pound figure.

To lose the weight Tanner cleaned up his diet and designed his own fitness routine that includes a high-intensity free weight regimen, ultimate frisbee on the weekends, and an occasional trip to the badminton court.

Tanner didn?t have a strategy in sharing his weight loss story on Reddit. He had simply taken some before and after pictures of himself and was pleased with the results. So he opted to post them on Reddit with the hopes inspiring other people toward the same results.

Linda Armistead, 42, of Ansonia, Connecticut is another Reddit weight loss success story. Linda lost more than 100 pounds thanks to the help of a medically-supervised diet program and completely transformed her life.

Her starting weight was 278 pounds, and today she?s a slim and healthy 168 pounds.

Linda decided to share her weight loss story on Reddit, as well as on her blog?Keep Weight Off For Life, because she knew the statistics for maintaining weight loss long-term are abysmal and discouraging, and she wanted to show people that long-term weight maintenance is possible.

She also wanted to be available to answer any questions about the type of program she used.

For those looking for fitness inspiration, feedback on a new diet you?re considering, or simply a place to tout your weight loss, check out Reddit. From weight loss tips to discussion on the latest news in politics, you?re likely to find what you?re searching for.

Texas won't change gas tax this session, transportation official says

Lance Murray

The state's gas tax will likely remain unchanged during this legislative session.

The gas tax in Texas will likely stay the same this legislative session but lawmakers are looking for other ways to fund transportation projects.

Some ideas, like increasing vehicle registration fees, still impact consumers, while others, like reallocating existing revenue streams, don?t.

Today, I spoke with Vic Suhm, executive director of the Tarrant Regional Transportation Coalition, who was on his way to Austin to talk with lawmakers about the urgent need to invest in the state?s highways.

He said he supports increasing the 20-cent gas tax, which hasn't been changed since 1991.

But, he said there's not a lot of public support for that so legislators aren't likely to consider it.

?The likelihood of them increasing the gas tax this session is pretty low but it?s some we try to keep in front of them,? said Suhm.

Where the gas tax dollars go could change, however.

Lawmakers in the house and senate have shown support for discontinuing the use of gas tax funds for the Texas Department of Public Safety, Suhm said. Instead, state troopers would be funded from the state?s general fund.

That would free up more money for transportation projects.

Another 25 percent of the revenue goes to fund public education and would require voter approval to reallocate.

Other ideas up for consideration would allocate sales tax from the sale of new and used vehicles to transportation. A bill by Sen. Ken Paxton, R-McKinney, would do the same with sales tax dollars from tires and automotive parts.

The annual vehicle registration fee also could increase.

Nicholas covers energy, banking and other topics for the Dallas Business Journal.

The Night Parade: Film Review

The Bottom Line

A very small, modestly promising two-hander about a man and a woman who get something going one night on the streets of Paris.

Venue

Santa Barbara Film Festival

Director

Geraldine Maillet

A wee wisp of a film, The Night Parade could also scarcely be more French, despite the fact that its original French-market title, After, is in English. The story of the beginnings of a potential love affair during the course of an all-nighter spent darting through the streets of a mostly empty Paris, Geraldine Maillet's first feature is soaked in nocturnal atmosphere and exhibits an alert responsiveness to every nuance expressed by the two lead actors. The film's exceedingly modest ambitions will restrict it internationally to second-tier festival rounds and limited theatrical runs in France, where it opened on January 30. But there is enough talent on display to warrant interest in a more venturesome future project from the writer-director.

Although she has made a couple of shorts, Maillet is better known in France for her books, one of which is titled What Would Tarantino Do in My Place? The answer to that question in the case of the present film would be to jack it up with elaborate conversational riffs instead of mundane everyday dialogue, a bunch of outre character actors and some crime of more consequence than the traffic-related infringements the male lead commits here.

PHOTOS: The Scene at Santa Barbara International Film Festival

For 83 minutes, Maillet sustains at least a degree of interest in a persistent come-on that begins in a Japanese restaurant where Julie (Julie Gayet) takes refuge during a late-evening downpour. The place is empty but for two employees and a good-looking young man, Guillaume (Raphael Personnaz). There isn't a taxi to be had, he chats her up and, when the rain relents, offers to take wherever she wants on his motorcycle. She hesitates, they talk some more, then off they go to a club he knows.

Right away, the most striking impression here is made by the way Maillet and cinematographer Martin De Chambaneix capture not only the look but the feel of night in the virtually deserted city. The rain has cleared the streets of pedestrians and traffic and no light comes from shops or apartment windows, just from the high street lamps that create pools of amber illumination that only enhance the looks of the blond Julie and black-haired and bearded Guillaume. The director has also gone out of her way to avoid immediately recognizable neighborhoods and touristy aspects of Paris, which is a commendable plus.

Over the course of the next few hours, which takes them from an upscale boite to a techno dance hall, an all-night restaurant and the front of her home, Guillaume never runs out of lines that keep Julie from calling it a night, even as it becomes clear she's married. She is, then, profoundly ambivalent, unwilling to discuss her problems with this somewhat younger guy she'll probably never see again, as he's leaving for South America in a few days.

The extent to which Julie might succumb, physically and/or emotionally, provides the only curiosity here (it fails to rise to anything one might call suspense). But their conversation becomes more personal and caring, if not quite intimate, as the film just manages to sustain its fragile viability until the sun rises and the future beckons.

Veterans of many films but not household names, Gayet and Peronnaz must carry the film and manage it capably, she with a reserve that cannot be allowed to become coy, he with an aggressiveness that must, and does, go beyond callowness to reveal some genuine tenderness underneath.

The eclectic score also enlivens the film's night without dominating it.

Socialists back 30-hour workweek initiative - The Local

Leading members of Germany's socialist Left party are backing an initiative to shorten the country's workweek to 30 hours without lowering wages in a bid to create more jobs.

More than 100 prominent German politicians, trade unionists and economists are demanding the measure in an open letter published on Monday.

?We need to make shortening working hours a project for society as a whole, it cant be a purely wage-related political task.? Hein-Josef Bontrup, professor for economic law in Gelsenkirchen and co-initiator of the letter, told daily newspaper the Tageszeitung.

Signed by leading politicians from The Left party, Katja Kipping and Sarah Wagenknecht, the ?Project Shorter Working Hours? argues introducing a weekly 30-hour limit would help combat mass unemployment in Germany.

Click here for The Local's job listings

?Along with the three million unemployed people in Germany there are over three million part time workers working on average 14.7 hours a week, which for them is insufficient,? the letter said, adding also that an oversupply in the work market was pushing down wages.

Change would need to be phased in over several years though and would only work if there was no drop in pay.

Bontrop told the Tageszeitung he was aware that union bosses would be sceptical of the move because they believed their employees would be too scared about a pay cut and having to do the same amount of work in less time.

?My experience is that a fundamental knowledge and awareness is lacking,? he said, adding that many union leaders "don't get first-semester economics. You have to limit labour otherwise you can't raise wages."

Source: AMR, US Airways delay meeting on merger

DALLAS (AP) ? The boards of American Airlines parent AMR Corp. and US Airways have pushed back meetings to consider final plans for their merger, Associated Press sources say.

A source close to the matter said Sunday that the AMR board wants to meet in person, and that the US Airways board would only meet after the AMR board approves a deal. The source requested anonymity because the talks are private.

It is not clear when the two boards would finally meet. People familiar with the matter said negotiations are continuing, on issues that include AMR CEO Tom Horton's exact title and role in the combined company.

Discussions were centered on Horton being a non-executive chairman of the board while US Airways management, led by CEO Doug Parker, would run the day-to-day operations of the new carrier, which would keep the American Airlines name.

The negotiations could still fall apart. United Airlines and Continental Airlines were within days of announcing a merger in 2008 when that deal fell apart, although they later resumed talks and completed a deal in 2010.

If American and US Airways combine, it would create the world's biggest airline as measured by passenger traffic, although United Continental Holdings Inc. would still be slightly bigger if regional operations such as United Express and American Eagle are counted.

On Friday, US Airways pilots ratified an agreement covering their pay and working terms if there is a merger. That was the last major piece to fall into place on the labor side for a merger to occur. American Airlines pilots approved a similar agreement in December. All three of American's unions support a merger that would result in US Airways management running the new company.

The committee representing unsecured creditors in AMR's bankruptcy case had planned to meet Monday.
