Maxime Nadeau, Hypnotist, Calls For Backup After Students Remain Stuck In Trance At Canadian Private School (VIDEO)

A handful of students at a Canadian private school got more than they bargained for when some remained in a trance for several hours after being hypnotized.

Earlier this month, Maxime Nadeau, 20, performed a routine at Coll?ge du Sacr?-Coeur, in which he hypnotized a group of 13- and 14-year-old girls, the CBC reports. But after several failed attempts to wake them from their trance, the hypnotist had to call on his mentor, Richard Whitbread, for backup.

"There were a couple of students who had their heads lying on the table and there were [others] who, you could tell, were in trance," Whitbread told the CBC. "The eyes were open and there was nobody home."

After travelling about an hour to the school, Whitbread used a "stern voice" to help bring the students back to reality.

According to Whitbread, Nadeau's good looks may have played a role in the trance.

About 13 students reported headaches or nausea, while five students reported "more serious trouble" following the performance, the Canadian Press reports.

School officials said they were not aware hypnotism is not recommended for children under 14 years old, the report notes.

According to the International Association of Pure Hypnoanalysts, hypnosis is simply a state of relaxation in which persons remain completely awake and susceptible to suggestions. Persons may "feel very heavy, relaxed, lethargic or quite light and tingly."

However, while this technique can be used to "modify your perceptions [and] behavior," persons remain completely in control of their actions, the Mayo Clinic notes.

A post featured on the Alchemy Institute of Hypnosis website points out that some forms of hypnosis are much more common than some might think and that they're often used by advertisers to sway customers into buying their products.

(AP) ? Authorities in northwest Ohio say it appears a woman who suddenly drove her car into a crowded town square, injuring dozens, may have done it accidentally.

Sgt. Jason Garlock of the Lima Police Department said Sunday that every indication is that the 63-year-old woman unintentionally drove her vehicle into the crowd Friday night. About 30 people were injured, and some were pinned under the car and freed when bystanders lifted it.

Garlock says the woman was briefly detained but was not arrested. She has been released pending further investigation. Police haven't identified her.

No charges have been filed, but Garlock says that could change after witnesses are interviewed and a toxicology report is complete. He says it could take weeks.

(AP) ? Elections are supposed to determine the will of the people, to set a nation on a new course with a government that enjoys the mandate of the majority. In splintered Greece, the vote on Sunday is shaping up as a challenge to this time-honored rule of democracy.

For Greeks are in a collective state of depression, burdened not just by the shriveling of their finances, but also political divisions with deep roots in history and confusion over their identity and the very concept of statehood. And yet an anxious world is looking to this tiny actor on the international stage for clues to whether the global economy will cling to a path of gradual recovery, or veer toward another destructive scenario like the one that followed the 2008 collapse of the Lehman Brothers investment bank in the United States.

A street scene in Athens on Saturday symbolized the sense of despair, tinged with defiance, which pervades a country battered by five years of recession after years of easy credit and consumption. A homeless man slept in a doorway, a cardboard box beside him, a slit cut in its top in hopes that passers-by would drop in a few coins. "We don't need the euro," read a slogan on the campaign posters of a small far-left party, plastered on an adjacent wall. Polls indicate that most Greeks want to stay in Europe's monetary union, but years of austerity with few signs of improvement have deepened their sense of isolation.

"People are in agony about their savings; their jobs, their safety, their future (and their children's future)," Stathis Psillos, a philosophy professor at the University of Athens, wrote in an email.

Sunday's election is seen as pivotal in determining whether Greece pitches deeper into economic chaos, and is forced to return to its old currency, the drachma ? an eventuality that amounts to, at least in the short term, a journey into an economic and social void ? and whether Europe fragments or eventually becomes more unified. The frontrunners are a traditional party, New Democracy, that wants to modify an international bailout plan that has kept Greek finances afloat, and a left-wing party, Syriza, that surged in popularity because it opposes the old political order and wants to tear up the bailout deal in protest over the cutbacks it requires.

Abroad, there is concern that a victory for Syriza could trigger market panic and drag down other economically vulnerable countries such as Spain and Italy, and then ripple across other continents. The Greek outcome will be watched closely by leaders of the world's 20 most important economies, who are meeting this weekend in Mexico. However, neither Syriza nor New Democracy are projected to win enough votes to form a government alone, meaning Greece will have to form a coalition if it wants to avoid another election.

Elena Athanassopoulou, a political science professor at the American College of Greece, predicted "painful negotiations" among parties that would lead to a government after the vote, and said political stability was vital to prevent Greece going "any further down the slope."

An earlier round of elections in May failed to deliver a clear winner, and coalition talks collapsed. Even if New Democracy, led by Antonis Samaras, emerges on top, there is no guarantee that Greece's creditors, including other European countries and the International Monetary Fund, will accede to his desire to dilute the multi-billion dollar bailout terms, or that Greece can stick to austerity measures imposed by creditors. Also, the strong showing in the last elections of a far-right party, Golden Dawn, and accusations that its supporters have attacked immigrants encapsulate the wider mood of alienation and uncertainty.

"Right now in Greece, everybody gets to say everything, you get to listen to many opinions," said Paris Mexis, a designer for Beetroot, an award-winning firm based in Thessaloniki, Greece's second-biggest city. "We have a community that doesn't work as a community. We have renegade units, we have random units, we have people who produce and the production doesn't go anywhere. Everybody is alone. We need to go back to philosophy."

He said Greeks need to recover the basic principles that hold a society together and help it flourish, including organization, creativity and communication. Right now, the reality defies such ideals. Unemployment is about 22 percent, crime is up and public services are failing. Greece is not in full-blown disintegration ? that assessment might apply to the civil war between its Western-backed government and communists in the 1940s ? but even the idea of a state, in which a social contract exists between a government and its citizenry, is under strain today.

Widespread tax evasion, for example, was one of the failings that got Greece into its current financial mess. The government has sought to tighten up on the crime, but many Greeks, once accustomed to generous state handouts and public sector salaries, bridle at the idea because their daily circumstances are deteriorating.

"People are losing faith in the institutions," said Reto Foellmi, professor of international economics?at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. He said Greeks need to see a link between revenue collection and spending, and suggested that the decentralization of control over finances, whereby local authorities have more say in how funds are raised and spent in their districts, could benefit the country in the long term.

Psillos, the philosophy professor, said European leaders fail to see that Greece's "real problem" is that the traditional parties, dominant for generations, are no longer capable of creating consensus. He noted that Syriza, while untainted by association with austerity measures and past policy failures, offers a somewhat contradictory narrative that seeks balance "between an old left tradition and a need to accommodate within it tens of thousands of new voters who pin their hopes on it."

Many of Syriza's new supporters are civil servants who lost benefits under the former socialist government, that struggled to impose wage cuts and structural reforms and suffered as a result at the May polls. At present, many Greeks, disillusioned with politics, think their society has reached a dead end, but feel they don't have the tools to overhaul it, or recover what they once had. Psillos, who believes Syriza offers hope but needs time to hone its platform, summarized this ominous state of limbo by citing Alexander Herzen, a 19th century Russian intellectual.

"The death of the contemporary forms of social order ought to gladden rather than trouble the soul," Herzen wrote after the failure of European revolutionary movements in 1848. "Yet what is frightening is that the departing world leaves behind it, not an heir, but a pregnant widow. Between the death of the one and the birth of the other, much water will flow by, a long night of chaos and desolation will pass."

South Africa v England: Tom Rees backs old team-mates to match Boks' back row

?But for me, the thing which excited me the most and which I found the most interesting through all that rather sadly was my experiences with the doctors and surgeons who kept having to put me back together.

?There are plenty of people in rugby who don?t care what?s wrong with them, they just want it fixed, but a fair few of us wanted to understand that and make use of the top people around you. It?s something I am very excited about.?

He is also excited about the Test series about to take place in South Africa and believes that England will win at least one rubber, even if they do not win the series.

England against South Africa is always a Test match with a ferocious edge. Both teams reached their nadir this century against one another ? South Africa turning Twickenham into a boxing ring when going down to a 50 point defeat in 2002, England humiliated in the pool stage of the 2007 World Cup where they failed to post a single point in response to their opponent?s 36.

Rees, who played in the drubbing in Paris, acknowledges that relations on the pitch between the two sides can be strained, but clearly has a deep respect for the qualities of the South Africans as players and as men.

?They take it all very, very seriously. There?s a huge amount of passion and pride goes into the Springbok jersey,? he says.

?I don?t think it is necessarily a mark of hostility towards other nations because you only have to look at what they do to their own.

?I heard JPR Williams speak quite recently and someone asked ?are there any good South Africans??

?His immediate response, and I from my limited experience agree, was that South Africans are a fantastic people. Yes, they?re abrasive, they?re physical, they?re arrogant as well if you want. But, they will respect you if you will stand up and go toe to toe with them.

?They are some of the most fierce competitors you could ever get, but some of the most down to earth, honest people at the same time.?

Despite this, England will expect few pleasantries from their opponents or their fanatical supporter base in the Boer heartlands until the series is over. Rees?s South African friends have been messaging him all week predicting the Boks to ease home by 60. They aren?t joking.

?As for supporters,, it will be a hostile environment, but I don?t think it?s borne out of any genuine dislike or hatred towards anyone else, it?s just purely national pride.,? Rees adds.

?My experience was that in New Zealand, that was a place where it was more hostile directly towards you and less based around their own side.?

A problem now as in Rees's day, England have long enjoyed the services of a pool of world class back-rowers, without ever quite discovering a world class back-row. The team have struggled to find a balance, as Rees admits: ?If you think back to 2003, the guys there ? Hill, Back, Dallaglio - were THE back-row. Joe Worsley was a rising star and he was restricted to just coming off the bench, Lewis Moody as well ? his career was stalled because these guys were there the whole time.

?That?s because they were injury free and they were playing at the best of their ability. There hasn?t been that level of consistency with the guys there at the moment. There have been injuries, there have been disruptive things. When they start to get going, they get derailed, but we are building towards a critical mass. All of these guys are playing really well and if they stay fit, then three or four should be able to take their game to that next level.

?As for the back-row I enjoyed playing in the most, if I had to pick a starting line-up it would be myself at seven, James [Haskell] at six and Lawrence [Dallaglio] at eight, because as a young guy growing up watching Lawrence and going through the academy with James, being part of that unit was probably my fondest moment on the pitch.?

As for Rees?s former club side, Wasps, he is confident that they will arrest the slump in their fortunes this year after narrowly avoiding relegation.

?We did have a rather exceptional injury list this year and financially we don?t have the same clout as other clubs. Behind the scenes budgets have been tightened and cut.

?To be honest, with everything that happened at the club, it?s a wonder we weren?t relegated by Christmas. The guys did a fantastic job of hanging in there and taking it down to the wire.

?Coming out of that this year, if the sale of the club goes through, we will have a base to build on and a lot of experience in the likes of Haskell and Palmer coming back. Young players have also gained three years? worth of experience in one season owing to being in a situation they would not have been in in an ideal world.

?I?m not saying that they will turn it all around in one year, but they certainly won?t be in that situation again.?

Rather than from the bottom of a ruck, this most devoted of Wasps men will be able to watch the action from the comfort of Imperial?s student bar. The club?s loss, and England?s, will be medicine?s gain.
