Birth is no reason to go to hospital, review suggests

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? A new Cochrane Review concludes that all countries should consider establishing proper home birth services. They should also provide low-risk pregnant women with information enabling them to make an informed choice. The review has been prepared by senior researcher, statistician Ole Olsen, the Research Unit for General Practice, University of Copenhagen, and midwifery lecturer PhD Jette Aaroe Clausen.

In many countries it is believed that the safest option for all women is to give birth in hospital. However, observational studies of increasingly better quality and in different settings suggest that planned home birth in many places can be as safe as planned hospital birth and with less intervention and fewer complications.

"If home birth is going be an attractive and safe option for most pregnant women, it has to be an integrated part of the health care system," Ole Olsen says and adds, "In several Danish regions the home birth service has been very well organized for several years. This is not the case everywhere in the world."

The updated Cochrane Review concludes that there is no strong evidence from experimental studies (randomized trials) to favor either planned hospital birth or planned home birth for low-risk pregnant women. At least not as long as the planned home birth is assisted by an experienced midwife with collaborative medical back up in case transfer should be necessary.

Fewer interventions in home birth

Routines and easy access to medical interventions may increase the risk of unnecessary interventions in birth explaining why women who give birth at home have a higher likelihood for a spontaneous labour. There are 20-60 per cent fewer interventions, for example fewer cesarean sections, epidurals and augmentation among those women who plan a homebirth; and 10-30 per cent fewer complications, for example post partum bleeding and severe perineal tears.

"Patience is important if women want to avoid interference and give birth spontaneously," says Jette Aaroe Clausen. "At home the temptation to make unnecessary interventions is reduced. The woman avoids for example routine electronic monitoring that may easily lead to further interventions in birth."

Jette Aaroe Clausen adds that interventions in childbirth are common in many countries, but also that there is a growing concern internationally because interventions may lead to iatrogenic effects; iatrogenic effects meaning unintended consequences of the intervention. Routine electronic monitoring may for example lead to more women having artificial rupture of membranes which in turn can lead to more interventions.

Evidence and human rights

While the scientific evidence from observational studies has been growing, the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg in the case Ternovszky versus Hungary has handed down a judgment stating that "the right to respect for private life includes the right to choose the circumstances of birth." This is quoted in the review.

Thus the conclusions of the review are based on human rights and ethics as well as on results from the best available scientific studies.

Interior Design Tricks And Tips To Decorate Your Home ? Long Live ...

Think outside of the box when it comes to your headboard. You can make a strong design statement by creating your own one-of-a-kind headboard. Use your imagination. Anything like an old door, a garden gate, an oriental screen, or metal ceiling tiles can be repurposed as an unique headboard.

Use your own photos as artwork. As a cheaper and more personal way to adorn your walls, use photos that you?ve taken. Either have prints made and frame them or use one of the many photo-to-canvas providers to have your photo made into a gallery canvas. If you are more tech-savvy, you can alter your photos in software to make them look even more like artwork.

When you are getting ready to paint a room, paint just a portion of a wall first, and wait a few days before you decide. You can avoid the hassle and added cost of re-painting a poor color choice by seeing how you feel about it after a couple of days.

When you are arranging furniture in your living room, position them in a way that will facilitate the flow of foot traffic. You would not want to dodge your furniture every time you turn around. If furniture pieces are in the middle of the room, be sure to allow enough space between them so that you can easily walk between them.

Use mirrors when decorating your home. Mirrors can be very handy, especially if you live in a small space. A mirror on one or two walls isn?t just convenient for fixing your hair on the go, they can give the illusion of more space. One strategically placed mirror can do wonders for opening up a room.

Whenever taking on an interior-design project on a very small room, it might be a good idea to install a sheet mirror for one of the walls. This gives the appearance that your room is actually twice as big as it really is, which can greatly enhance the look of the room.

Lighting is crucial in any interior design. Adding additional lighting will make any room appear larger. If you make use of all available natural light and add additional lighting, you will make any room seem larger than it really is. Light is the key when designing to make rooms seem larger.

Try decorating with maps. Maps are a fun and inexpensive way to decorate a room. You can frame them and hang them on the wall as art or you can adhere them directly to your walls as wallpaper. They are great for children?s rooms and home offices. Make the decor more personal by using maps of places you?ve been, your hometown, or places you dream of going.

When you are shopping for a computer desk, you should always think more about the chair you will be sitting in and less about the desk. You need to have a comfortable chair to sit in especially if you plan on spending a lot of time behind the computer working or surfing the web.

Make a sketch of the floor plan that you want to install before you put any furniture in your home. This will help you to reduce the amount of shifting, which can take a large toll on your back. Planning in advance is the best way for you to organize your interior design project.

The article above has hopefully helped you see that there are many aspects to interior design, but no really wrong or right way to approach it. Take notes and don?t let yourself get overwhelmed with all of the information you have just read. Apply the tips to your designs and you are sure to see a more put together home.

Countdown to an exciting event with Can't Wait for iPhone and iPad review

Counting down to an important or exciting date like Christmas, you baby's due date, or the iPhone 5 launch? Then Can't Wait is for you! Can't Wait is an iPhone and iPad app that has a single purpose -- to keep track of the number of days until or since important dates in your life.

There are two main screen views in Can't Wait: a list of all your events and each event's individual page. When adding an event to your list, you select one of 10 colors, give it a title, indicate whether it's and event you "can't wait" for (countdown) or an "unforgettable" event that's already passed (count up), and select that date.

The Events screen will show the list of all your events. Shown with each event is the number of days until or since the event and it's title, date, and color. You can sort the list by nearest, farthest, name, or color. You can also swipe to delete individual events or tap the little arrow to the right of an event to edit its information.

If you close the Events page, you'll be take to the individual screens for your events. Each event's page is very minimal and shows only the numbers of days, the event name, and the associated color. The numbers are displayed nice and huge and for coundown timers, the event name is in a small font at the top, and for past events, the names are at the bottom. If you tap the Twitter icon in the lower left of the screen, you can send out a Tweet that shares the info on that screen. For example: "5 more days until iPhone 5 launch". Unfortunately, Facebook integration has not been added, yet.

On thing I've noticed about Can't Wait is that it counts down different than I would. For example, if it's currently Tuesday, I would say that there are 3 more days until Friday. Can't Wait says there is 2 days. I'm not sure if this is cultural thing, because I have encountered other apps the have similar countdown methods. I think there should at least be an option to pick if you want "0 days" to mean the day before a date or the date itself.

The good

  • Count down number of days until a specific date (like the launch of the iPhone 5)
  • Count up the number of days passed since an important date (like your wedding date)
  • Gorgeous UI
  • 10 colors
  • Universal for iPhone and iPad

The bad

  • Some colors are associated with a bolder font giving the illusion that those dates are more important
  • Countdown considers the day before the event as 0 days instead of 1 day
  • Can't share to Facebook (hopefully that changes with new Facebook integration in iOS 6

The bottom line

Can't Wait is an extremely simple app -- which is precisely what makes it so great. It's clear that a lot of effort went into the overall design with the pastel colors and beautiful, yet, minimalistic UI. The folks at Romly have found the perfect balance between design and function with Can't Wait.

360 degree wellness: Five Aspects Qi Gong Intensive Preview

Five Aspects Qi Gong Intensive: Objectives and Curriculum

September 24-26 I will be presenting an intro-intensive to Five Aspects Qi Gong in Seattle, Washington at Samadhi Yoga.? The objectives for this course are as follows:
????????? To provide a rationale for the practice of Qi Gong.
????????? To provide detailed instruction on cultivation practices for the five elemental energies.
????????? To provide useful information on five elements applications.
????????? To introduce and apply practices for the Five Aspects? personal transformation energy work.
????????? To activate and awaken the elemental energies of the body.
The curriculum for this three day course is as follows:
????????? Temple Meditation
????????? Finding and feeling energy
????????? Five Elements Form
????????? Five Aspects Theory and Application
Now, the point of all this is WHAT?? You may ask yourself Why? and Who Cares?? I will now attempt to answer those questions?
Q:? First of all, what is the difference between five elements and Five Aspects?
A:? Five elements represent fundamental energies within the human body, human mind, and all of nature.? They are water, wood, fire, earth, and metal.? The elements combine and interact in ways that create a tapestry of flow which we all call life.
Five Aspects are a function of the relationships we have with our world, both inside and out.? The Five Aspects are Awareness, Will, Heart, Spirit, and Embodiment.? The Five Aspects are closely linked with the five elements, but they are a personalized and intimate expression of these energies as they manifest within a person?s life.
Q:? How do the five elements relate to me?
A:? The following is a basic description of each of the five elements and its relevance to our lives.
Water:? The energy of intuition and emotion.? In the practice of water, we learn to let go of control.? With the release of control we find freedom within our emotions.? Often times, when we become trapped in judgment, the fluid nature of the feeling body becomes rigid and ice-like.? This can manifest as fearful or avoidant behavior as well as stiffness or hardness within the body.? Practicing the art of water makes us more supple within our body, mind, and emotions.
Wood:? The energy of growth and aspiration.? The tree holds its roots deep within the Earth while its boughs reach toward the heavens.? If the tree forgets to acknowledge the sun, it withers.? If it is stoic and refuses the water it becomes brittle.? Therefore, a tree must be rooted within the experience of here and now, yet also aspire to lift itself upward toward the higher frequencies of light.? The tree embodies all of the various strata of Earthly life, providing us with a ladder through which we can find both integration and ascension.
Fire:? The energy of opening, forgiveness, and compassion.? Fire is the energy of light itself.? It is warmth, which allows us to be open, and it is combustion, which is the energy of transmutation.? Fire opens and penetrates into the frigid and darkened areas of our psyches so that we may know and experience ourselves more completely.? Fire breaks down the barriers of separation and returns us to a state of unity, wherein the oneness of life can be realized.
Earth:? The energy of integration and empowerment.? Earth teaches us to be present with the happenings within our life so that we may extract the wisdom from our experiences.? It is about digestion; the ability to take what we need and let go of the rest.? The letting go helps us to find our base, and to relieve ourselves of the unnecessary burdens of attachment.? Integration allows us to realize the strength that comes from experience, and to build from a place of authenticity and presence.
Metal:? The energy of confidence and self-expression.? Metal provides the scaffolding upon which we position ourselves to address the world.? It is the steel of our commitments and the conduit through which our energy flows out into the world.? Metal teaches us how to find discipline for the accomplishment of tasks, and structure through which we may embark into new territories of our heart?s unfolding landscape.
Q:? What are the Five Aspects? functions and how are they relevant?
A:? The Five Aspects are an intuitive and purely personal expression of the five elements.? They are a method for finding centering within the chaotic happenings of everyday life, and a set of techniques for integrating effectively into the passing moments of our lives.? I will provide a brief description of each aspect below.
Awareness: ?Awareness is the ability to step out of subjectivity and find grace within periods of emotional constraint.? When the waters of emotion become congested, and the chill of fear begins to set in, awareness is the ability to stop and let go.? With awareness we can create a pristine moment wherein all of the noise of our minds recedes into the background and true sight/insight becomes attainable.
Will:? Will teaches us to trust the light we find within ourselves.? It is the practice of becoming a mirror for this light and magnifying it out into the world.? Will teaches us to how to honor the gifts alive within us, and gives us a tangible experience of making authentic connections with others.
Heart: ?Heart is the center of the soul.? It is the place of primary intelligence within us where we have access to all other dimensions of existence.? The practice of heart is to establish a link between all of the subjective elements of personality in order to forge a nucleus of presence.? This nucleus becomes a blazing sun within our center which keeps us connected to the fundamental essence of our being.
Spirit:? Spirit is the art of ascension.? It is the activation of mind and body in order to attain higher frequencies of awareness and intuition. ?Spirit is also attunement with the essence of creation, the creative source, and the energy of grace.? Spirit is a vehicle for attaining elevated states of being, while remaining true to our intrinsic nature.? Spirit allows us to live into the highest potentials of our grandest dreams.
Embodiment:? Embodiment is the art bringing healing and restoration to our physical self.? It is about attuning the cells of our bodies to the frequency of light while eliminating dense and toxic elements.? Embodiment brings restoration to the tissues while enhancing circulation, and relieving stress. ?It is the way we realize and manifest our work into physical reality.
Q:? So why should I care about any of that?
A:? We are beings with both physical and energetic dimensions.? If we live purely in the physical, life can become overly materialistic and banal.? If we live exclusively in spirit, in ether, we lose reference for our humanity and create an ever widening gap between ideology and experience.? To be truly integrated is to find true fulfillment.? We are spiritual creatures with a body and a mind.? When this trinity is in balance we are unstoppable, and with cooperation, there is nothing we cannot achieve as a species.? Our world is changing, and the need for the balanced integration of masculine-feminine, spirit-body, mind-emotion, and give-receive cannot be overstated.? Five Aspects Qi Gong is one avenue for creating and maintaining this balance between the dualities of Earthly life.? It is a tangible and reproducible practice which will work for anyone dedicated to self-improvement and personal growth.
Q:? How does this practice relate to Yoga?
A:? Yoga is a complete system within itself and therefore can be regarded as whole, and without need for augmentation.? That being said, yoga often refers to Asana or the practice of postures and alignment, within a more general sense.? To this description I would offer the following analogy.? If yoga is the water, qigong is the mist.? Applying this type of imagery and awareness to a standard yoga practice is akin to adding a new aspect to the experience of asana.? It is something which will live and grow within you and add new depths and dimensions to your life.

Renewable energy: Farmers air concerns at heated event

Dozens of farmers worried about plans to sell off their land near Peterborough took part in a heated meeting with council chiefs on Tuesday (4 September).

Around 100 people attended a meeting at Thorney Golf Club over the council?s plans to sell than 3,000 acres of farmland for renewable energy parks.

In July, the council approved an outline renewable energy strategy that could leadn to the building of solar panels and wind turbines on three sites - America Farm, Morris Fen and Newborough Farm.

If the plans are given the go-ahead by cabinet next year, several tenant farmers would be forced to leave their sites to make way for solar farms, wind farms or a combination of the two.

A number of worried farmers hit out at the plans during the meeting with several people accusing the council of only being interested in making money from the project.

One of the farmers, Jackie Dugdale raised concerns about the levels of silicon and lead contained within solar panels while another warned there would be ecological dangers of building on land which had been farmed for centuries and was also made up of flood plains.

David Sanders, councillor for Eye and Thorney, also criticised the council for not consulting with him about the plans.

He said: ?We have been left in the dark by the council and it?s outrageous.

?In my opinion, we are being stitched up by the council - all they are interested in is money. They are not interested in the livelihood of the farmers of which I have grown up with.

?My message to the council is if you want a fight you have come to the right place.?

Lee Collins, council?s manager for the project, stressed that it was at an early stage and that views aired at the meeting would be taken on board.

Are you affected? Do you live in the area?:

Medical College to study toddler ear infections

CREATED 10:36 AM

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- The Medical College of Wisconsin has a grant from the National Institutes of Health to study ear infections in preschoolers.

The $1.6 million, 5-year grant will be used to study fluid buildup in the ear following an infection that can cause hearing loss. Dr. Joseph Kerschner says they'll look at the characteristics of preschoolers with hearing loss. Kerschner says researchers will also look at what happens on the molecular level with different bacterial combinations.

Antibiotics are the most common treatment for ear infections caused by bacteria. However, Kerschner tells Wisconsin Public Radio News (http://tinyurl.com/8ejenvc ) medicine doesn't always work for stubborn infections.

About 1 million ear tubes are surgically inserted in children's ears every year. The tubes allow air to get to the middle ear so fluid can drain. That fluid can prevent the eardrum from vibrating normally.
