North Koreans mourn Kim Jong Il 1 year later

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) ? North Koreans across the country stopped in their tracks at midday Monday to silently honor former ruler Kim Jong Il, whose death one year ago swept his untested 20-something son to power.

Pyongyang construction workers took off their yellow hard hats and bowed at the waist as sirens wailed across the city for three minutes. The son, Kim Jong Un, presided over a solemn ceremony to reopen the sprawling granite mausoleum where his father's embalmed remains will lie in state near those of his grandfather, the nation's founder Kim Il Sung.

Tens of thousands of North Koreans gathered in the frigid plaza outside the renovated hall where Kim Jong Il's body was to go on public display later Monday. Lined with snow-tinged firs, the square has been turned into a park at Kim Jong Un's orders and his father's portrait installed on the building's fa?ade alongside that of Kim Il Sung.

The elder Kim died last Dec. 17 from a heart attack while traveling on his train. His death was famously followed by scenes of North Koreans dramatically wailing in the streets of Pyongyang, and of his pudgy young son leading ranks of uniformed and gray-haired officials through a series of funeral and mourning rites.

The mood in the capital was decidedly more upbeat a year later, with some of the euphoria carrying over from last week's successful launch of a rocket carrying a satellite named for one of Kim Jong Il's many titles, Kwangmyongsong, or "Lode Star," a nickname given to him at birth according to the official lore.

Speaking outside the mausoleum, renamed the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, the military's top political officer, Choe Ryong Hae, said North Korea should be proud of the satellite, calling it a show of strength to the world.

Much of the rest of the world, however, was swift in condemning the launch, which was seen by the United States and other nations as a thinly disguised cover for testing missile technology that could someday be used for a nuclear warhead.

The test, which potentially violates a United Nations ban on North Korean missile activity, underlined Kim Jong Un's determination to continue carrying out his father's hardline policies even if they draw international condemnation.

Some outside experts worry that Pyongyang's next move will be to press ahead with a nuclear test in the coming weeks, a necessary next step toward building a warhead small enough to be carried by a long-range missile.

Despite inviting further isolation for his impoverished nation and the threat of stiffer sanctions, Kim Jong Un won national prestige and clout by going ahead with the rocket launch.

At a memorial service on Sunday, North Korea's top leadership not only eulogized Kim Jong Il, but also praised his son. Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of North Korea's parliament, called the launch a "shining victory" and an emblem of the promise that lies ahead with Kim Jong Un in power.

The rocket's success also fits neatly into the narrative of Kim Jong Il's death. Even before he died, the father had laid the groundwork for his son to inherit a government focused on science, technology and improving the economy. And his pursuit of nuclear weapons and the policy of putting the military ahead of all other national concerns have also carried into Kim Jong Un's reign.

In a sign of the rocket launch's importance, Kim Jong Un invited the scientists in charge of it to attend the mourning rites in Pyongyang, according to state media.

The reopening of the mausoleum on the first anniversary of the leader's death also follows tradition. Kumsusan, the palace where his father, Kim Il Sung, served as president, was reopened as a mausoleum on the first anniversary of his death in 1994.

Study details brain damage triggered by mini-strokes

Thursday, December 13, 2012

A new study appearing today in the Journal of Neuroscience details for the first time how "mini-strokes" cause prolonged periods of brain damage and result in cognitive impairment. These strokes, which are often imperceptible, are common in older adults and are believed to contribute to dementia.

"Our research indicates that neurons are being lost as a result of delayed processes following a mini-strokes that may differ fundamentally from those of acute ischemic events," said Maiken Nedergaard, M.D., D.M.Sc., the lead author of the study and professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC). "This observation suggests that the therapeutic window to protect cells after these tiny strokes may extend to days and weeks after the initial injury."

The prevalence of mini-strokes, or microinfarcts, has only been recently appreciated because common imaging techniques, such as MRI, are typically not sensitive enough to detect these microscopic injuries.

Similar to severe ischemic strokes, mini-strokes are caused when blood flow is blocked to a small area of the brain, usually by particle that travelled there from another part of the body. But unlike acute ischemic strokes ? which bring about immediate symptoms such as numbness, blurry vision, and slurred speech ? mini-strokes usually pass without notice. However, it is increasingly appreciated that these smaller strokes have a lasting impact on neurological function.

Microinfarcts are far more common than previously understood; it is believed that about 50 percent of individuals over the age of 60 have experienced at least one mini-stroke. Studies have also correlated the presence of mini-strokes with the symptoms of dementia. An estimated 55 percent of individuals with mild dementia and upwards of 70 percent of individuals with more severe symptoms show evidence of past mini-strokes. This association has led researchers to believe that these mini-strokes may be key contributors to age-related cognitive decline and dementia.

Nedergaard and her colleagues were the first to develop an animal model in which the complex progression and, ultimately, the cognitive impact of mini-strokes could be observed. Her team found that, in most instances, these strokes result in a prolonged period of damage to the brain.

A small fraction of these microinfarcts unfold in a manner similar to acute strokes; cell death is immediate and the brain quickly seals off the site of the stroke and begins to "digest" the damaged tissue. However, the researchers also identified a second and far more common form of mini-stroke ? which they labeled incomplete lesions ? where the cell death can drag on for several weeks.

"In most microinfarcts the injury is incomplete," said Nedergaard. "There is no scar tissue to separate the stroke site from the rest of the brain and the cells that would normally support the neurons may not function properly. As a result, the neurons at the site continue to slowly die like a smoldering fire. This suggests that, unlike acute ischemic strokes where the cell death occurs in the first 24 hours, there is a longer period in which we can medically intervene and stop the neuronal death that results from mini-strokes."

The researchers then attempted to determine the cognitive impact of microinfarcts. Mice who were victims of mini-strokes underwent a series of experiments during which they had to recall objects or respond to certain audio cues. The researchers observed that the mice with mini-strokes were far more likely to fail these tasks ? suggesting neurological impairment ? compared to healthy mice.

Scientists call for Turing pardon

Some of Britain's leading scientists have called on the government to grant a posthumous pardon to Bletchley Park codebreaker Alan Turing.

Turing was convicted of gross indecency in 1952 after acknowledging a sexual relationship with a man.

Professor Stephen Hawking, Astronomer Royal Lord Rees and the Royal Society's Sir Paul Nurse are among 11 signatories to a letter in the Daily Telegraph.

They urge David Cameron to "formally forgive this British hero".

The scientists said: "We write in support of a posthumous pardon for Alan Turing, one of the most brilliant mathematicians of the modern era.

"He led the team of Enigma codebreakers at Bletchley Park, which most historians agree shortened the Second World War.

"Yet successive governments seem incapable of forgiving his conviction for the then crime of being a homosexual, which led to his suicide, aged 41."

Denying that it would set a precedent, they added: "It is time his reputation was unblemished."

The others who signed the letter are Lord Currie of Marylebone, Lord Grade of Yarmouth, Lord Faulkner of Worcester, Lord Sharkey, Lord Smith of Finsbury, Baroness Trumpington, Sir Timothy Gowers of Cambridge University and the Science Museum's Dr Douglas Gurr.

Homosexuality was illegal at the time of the mathematician's conviction.

Turing was part of the team at Bletchley Park that cracked the Nazi Enigma code, vital to the allied war effort. He is now widely recognised as a computing pioneer.

However, at the time of his death - which an inquest recorded as suicide - he was virtually unknown to the public. His work at Bletchley Park was kept secret until 1974.

The government rejected a call to pardon Turing in February, when it was presented with an online petition with more than 23,000 signatures.

Brent slips toward $109 on higher US stockpile, fiscal concerns

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Brent crude slipped toward $109 a barrel on Thursday, on rising oil stockpiles and weaker fuel demand in the United States, while fears that the world's largest economy might miss a deadline for next year's budget kept bulls in check.

Deadlocked talks to avert a "fiscal cliff" of steep tax hikes and budget cuts in the United States returned to investors' focus after announcements by the U.S. Federal Reserve of more monetary stimulus buoyed global markets.

Sharp differences on the 2013 budget persisted between Congressional Republicans and the White House on Wednesday, when negotiators warned the showdown could drag on past Christmas.

Brent crude fell in the first of four sessions and was down 22 cents to $109.28 a barrel by 0611 GMT while U.S. crude was at $86.55, down 22 cents. The January Brent contract expires on Friday.

"The fiscal cliff continues to be a concern and we've got negative data out of the United States in terms of oil inventories," said Natalie Rampono, a commodities analyst at ANZ in Melbourne.

U.S. crude inventories rose last week against expectations of a fall while gasoline and distillates stockpiles jumped more than expected. The jump in fuel stocks came despite a pull-back in refinery output and steady import levels.

"Supply is still very high in the United States and the high distillates stocks indicates demand is pretty weak, although it should be strong at this time of the year," Rampono said.

Demand will be sluggish through 2013 as economic expansion stays tepid and crude supply levels comfortable, which could ease price pressure on consumers, the International Energy Agency said.

Global oil demand would grow 865,000 barrels per day in 2013 to hit 90.5 million bpd, the IEA said.

In Vienna, OPEC ministers agreed to retain the producer group's 30-million barrel-a-day output target and meet next on May 31.

The target is higher than what is required from OPEC to meet demand next year, some market observers say, but the excess supply has been useful in cushioning the impact on prices from a sharp drop in Iranian oil exports this year.

"The supply is getting a bit tighter in the Middle East because demand is improving in Asia," Rampono said, adding that new refineries coming online in China next year would increase crude imports by the world's second largest oil consumer.

For oil products, U.S. heating oil and gasoline futures slipped on Thursday after sharp gains the previous day following a fire at Motiva's refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, the largest in the United States.

The joint venture between Shell and Saudi Aramco aborted a restart of its 350,000 barrel per day (bpd) crude unit after a fractured pipe caused a fire.

Dennis Merritt Jones: A Pearl of Great Price: The Greatest Gift You Have Ever Been Given!

"If you're reading this... Congratulations, you're alive. If that's not something to smile about, then I don't know what is." -- Chad Sugg

Last Saturday, as I navigated my way through the frenzied masses who were on a mission to get their Christmas shopping done and take advantage of some "super sales," I had an interesting epiphany: While shopping for a unique gift for a close friend, I became aware of one special gift that had no price tag -- it wasn't for sale, even at any price. But first, the back-story:

What was going on that moment at the mall was an out-picturing of what was going on in my head -- I caught myself red-handed not practicing what I preach. If you have known me for any time, you know that I am a big proponent of mindfulness, which is the practice of aligning one's mind with their body by being present in the moment. For me, the practice is about consciously entering into the flow of life and feeling the joy of being alive, irrespective of where I am or what I am doing -- and this includes the mall. I have to admit that at that moment, my mind was missing in action, on reconnaissance somewhere in the frenzy far out in front of where my body was, looking for my friend's gift. It is safe to say I definitely was not "enjoying life" in the moment.

I don't know about you, but sometimes I get so caught up in the frenzy of the day that I forget what a gift it is to have a life at all. It's easy to become entangled in the things that seem to demand so much of our attention just to get through the day -- and with the holidays fast approaching, it simply exacerbates the problem. No doubt we are all very busy from the time we get up in the morning to the time we retire at night; it's called "doing" life. The question to ponder is how much time do we spend on autopilot taking the life we are "doing" for granted? Most of us trudge on daily, seldom giving a second thought about what a blessing it is that our soul has a home in which to live, this garment we call a body.

There is a beautiful parable that comes from the East about appreciating the precious gift of life: Imagine a solid granite mountain a mile high. Now imagine a small bird with a silk scarf in its beak... dragging the scarf along the ridge of mountain, until finally the mountain is worn down to the ground. While it may take some creative stretching of your imagination, consider the idea that as long as it takes for the bird to wear down the mountain is how often one soul receives the gift of a human body.

Clearly, this is a metaphor, however, if it causes you to pause just for a moment and think about it, the parable has done what it was meant to do -- to encourage you to take time to contemplate the fact that your life is a pearl of great price; in other words, when you stop to really consider it, the gift you have been freely given has a value beyond measure. One might ask, what is the "practical" value in taking precious time out of my busy day to appreciate the gift of my life? How will it change things for me in the real world? The answer is not complicated at all. With appreciation of the gift of life comes a shift in perspective: To understand what I mean, just ask yourself, "Is there any amount of money I would take in exchange for my next breath?" More than likely, the answer is "no." This awareness alone will help you value yourself more and, in the process, be more mindful of how you spend your precious time. It will also help you appreciate the gift of life that has been freely given to your loved ones, which so generously spills over into your own life.

Stopping to appreciate the gift of life itself is a game changer. As you consciously look into the mystery and the miracle of the gift that has been so freely given to you, you may naturally begin to ask yourself, "How then shall I honor the Giver of the gift today?" How you answer that question will be found in your actions -- the manner in which how mindfully you engage in using the gift. Not taking it for granted is a beautiful place to begin.

The practice then is to consciously pause throughout the day, irrespective of where you are or what you may be doing, and take an intentional, deep breath. Then smile, and just for a brief moment, feel the joy of having the privilege of being alive. This means no "yeah, but"s or qualifying it based on current circumstances -- just synch your mind with your body and allow yourself to be one with the greatest gift you've ever been given: Your life is a pearl of great price, its value is beyond measure. That makes you a very wealthy person -- and that really is something to smile about, even at the mall.
