Venezuela might have the world's cheapest gas. But if you are heading through a McDonald's drive-thru, don't expect the same deal: It's got the most expensive Big Mac in the world.

The Economist's most recent "Big Mac" index?shows that the McDonald's trademark will run you just over $9 in Venezuela, whose capital city?Caracas now also ranks among the top 10 most expensive in the world, according to the Economist's cost of living index. It's the only city in the Americas to land in the top 10, sandwiched between Paris and Geneva.

Of course,?as the Economist points out,?cost calculations in the birthplace of Venezuelan President Hugo?Chavez's?"Bolivarian Revolution"?are inflated.?They are?made using the country's currency controls, which peg the dollar at about a quarter of its street value.

The survey admits that swapping greenbacks on the vast unregulated exchange market makes Venezuela's capital as cheap as Mumbai or Karachi, at the?bottom of the list.?

Changing money on the black market is technically a jailable offense, but anyone who's entered a Venezuelan airport knows finding a trader is as easy as hailing a cab.

This is good news for travelers seeking a quick trip to Angel Falls, or?for locals with access to foreign currency that they can exchange. But for most Caraque?os?the city is no bargain.

Besides overpriced hamburgers, Venezuela?has one of the world's highest inflation rates, which many economists blame on the "protectionist" policies of President Ch?vez. Analysts calculate that the average costs?for a three-child family have jumped 19 percent over the past year. And on Friday, Venezuela devalued its currency by a third, which could potentially push up inflation even higher.

There are certainly some deals to be had though,?even beyond cheap gas. For budget shoppers, for example, price controls and subsidies allow for low prices for many basic consumer goods.

But that's only when they are available. Sporadic shortages are also a part of life in Caracas and when store shelves are empty, it's common to see scarce goods being flipped for four times their worth on the streets.

Ch?vez has blamed the opposition for hoarding and speculating, causing shortages and price distortions. Critics of the Ch?vez administration say the problems stem from the government's failure to provide local businesses with enough foreign currency to meet import demands. Foreign goods are crucial to feeding the population, and when businesses can't get the dollars, they turn to the same black market used by locals and travelers, driving up costs.

Finger pointing aside, one thing is?clear: Whether or not Caracas is the most expensive city in the Americas largely depends on which type of currency you're carrying.

Time to rinse! AI assistant helps clean your teeth

FOR most of us, brushing our teeth is just a tedious part of the daily grind. But for people with dementia or learning difficulties, such tasks can be difficult. They could soon gain more independence thanks to an AI designed by Christian Peters at Bielefeld University in Germany and his colleagues.

Peters has already come up with a system that guides people when washing their hands. Brushing teeth is more complicated because it involves many steps - such as putting toothpaste on the brush, filling a glass with water or rinsing the mouth.

The TEBRA system uses a video camera to monitor someone brushing their teeth and checks that each step happens at the right time. It prompts them via a screen on the washstand if they forget a step or if they get stuck. The idea is not to dictate a routine, but to adapt to that of the user, says Peters.

TEBRA is being tested at a care home in Bielefeld for people with learning disabilities. Caregivers there reported that the system was less distracting for some people than a human carer. The work will be presented at the International Conference on Health Informatics in Barcelona, Spain, next week. Peters also plans to adapt his system to tasks such as shaving.

No sign that omega-3s benefit babies' brains

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A review of the existing evidence finds it to be inconclusive about whether omega-3 fatty acids taken by mothers during pregnancy boost their kids' brain development early in life.

"There are so many trials where pregnant women are supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids and they've all got different results," said lead study author Jacqueline Gould, a researcher at the Women's and Children's Health Research Institute in Adelaide, Australia. "We found that there was neither a positive nor a negative effect on visual or neurological outcomes."

The Australian team, who published their findings in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, analyzed data from 11 clinical trials with a total of 5,272 participants who were randomly assigned to take omega-3 supplements or placebos during the last half of their pregnancies.

Across the trials, the amount of omega-3 taken by the mothers ranged from 240 to 3,300 milligrams per day. And the ages at which children's brain and vision development were assessed ranged from newborn to 7 years old.

According to the researchers, most of the clinical trials included too few participants to distinguish subtle differences expected from nutritional studies, excluded complicated pregnancies (in which greater differences might have been seen) and didn't follow the children long enough during development.

"Our analysis highlights that more research is needed," Gould told Reuters Health.

Omega-3 fatty acids are crucial for healthy fetal brain development and are commonly found in fatty fish such as tuna, mackerel and sardines. Human brains and eyes contain large amounts of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), both forms of omega-3.

Developing fetuses can get DHA from their mothers' fat stores, and from food and supplements they consume during pregnancy.

The hope that omega-3 supplements might enhance brain development stems from research like a large study from Denmark that found mothers who reported eating more fish had children with greater neurological and motor development in their first months.

The author of that study, Dr. Sjurdur Olsen, head of the Center for Fetal Programming in Copenhagen, cautions, however, that in Denmark at least, mothers who eat more fish tend to be better educated and more well off - which could both be important factors in a child's development.

Other studies have found that an expecting mother's fish oil intake doesn't increase her child's IQ or enhance her baby's visual development. (See Reuters Health story of September 29, 2011 here: http://reut.rs/qbsjxQ

Still, several mainstream organizations, including the European Food Safety Authority and the World Health Organization, do endorse omega-3 supplements for expectant mothers, noted Harry Rice, vice president of regulatory and scientific affairs at the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s, a trade organization.

"It's because of the science that many organizations and government agencies around the world recommend DHA supplementation for pregnant and lactating women," Rice told Reuters Health in an email.

It may be too soon to reach a definitive conclusion on this topic, according to Elvira Larqu?, physiology professor at the University of Murcia in Spain, who independently reviewed DHA clinical trials in a 2012 study.

Larqu? agreed that more trials are needed. The ones analyzed in the new report had weaknesses, including the fact that all sources of DHA were not accounted for in the mothers' diets, and measures of intelligence were based on tests, such as observing a child play with a toy, that were too subjective.

Olsen said the discrepancy between official encouragement for mothers to take prenatal DHA supplements, and the actual evidence for their effects probably stems from wishful thinking.

"People want to have some good news," he said. "There's a strong wish to have simple means to get strong effects."
