Texas gun instructor draws heat for anti-Muslim ad (AP)

MASON, Texas ? On a YouTube clip that has gone viral, brash Texas handgun instructor Crockett Keller defiantly tells Muslims and non-Christian Arabs he won't teach them how to handle a firearm.

State officials see the ad as possible discrimination, and may revoke Keller's instructor license.

Tens of thousands of YouTube viewers have watched the $175 ad for Keller's business in the small community of Mason, which has won him a handful of admirers but that embarrassed locals say misrepresents their community. Muslim groups dismissed the 65-year-old as a bigot.

Among the couple of thousand residents in the Central Texas town, Keller has other reputations.

"He's a character and likes attention," said Diane Eames, a jeweler with a downtown shop in Mason's quaint town square.

Keller has received plenty of attention since his radio spot on a rural country music station in Mason County, about 100 miles west of Austin, went viral on the Internet. Keller said he whipped up the script on his iPad in 10 minutes. The ad quit airing last week.

"If you are a socialist liberal and/or voted for the current campaigner-in-chief, please do not take this class," Keller says in the ad's closing seconds, also taking a swipe at President Barack Obama. "You've already proven that you cannot make a knowledgeable and prudent decision as required under the law. Also, if you are a non-Christian Arab or Muslim, I will not teach you this class. Once again, with no shame, I am Crockett Keller."

The Texas Council on American-Islamic Relations called the ad ugly rhetoric undeserving of media attention. Others have called Keller's phone number from the ad to personally tell him worse, including alleged death threats.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is now investigating whether to revoke or suspend Keller's license to teach concealed handgun courses.

"Conduct by an instructor that denied service to individuals on the basis of race, ethnicity or religion would place that instructor's certification by the Department at risk of suspension or revocation," the department said in a statement.

Inside a remote highway cabin on the edge of the Llano River, where a draped, full-size cannon is parked across from his desk, Keller said he was inspired to make the ad after being "flabbergasted" by a couple neighbors who left the state to campaign for Obama. As for refusing to teach Muslims, Keller described that as an afterthought tacked onto the spot, which he couldn't remember but said was likely generated from something in the news.

"I got to thinking, `Hmm, I'm arming the enemy,'" Keller said.

Of course, even Keller knows that Muslims were unlikely to show up at his door asking to take his $100 course.

Mason County, as Eames described it, is "white bread" ? the population was 93 percent Caucasian in the latest census, and all Republican statewide candidates won with at least 70 percent of the vote in 2010. Keller said he wasn't aware of any Muslims in Mason County, nor could a handful of locals name one.

Eames and Joyce Arnold, a real estate agent, said they worried about the radio spot embarrassing the city. Eames ran what she described as a successful sex-toy business in Mason before opening the jewelry store, and Scott Haupert, co-owner of the Sandstone Cellars Winery, said Mason is more tolerant than Keller's comments would suggest.

"I voted for Obama and I'll vote for Obama again," said Haupert, an avowed Democrat. "If I signed up to take his gun control class, he would not reject me."

But Keller has also won over some fans. As he spoke with a reporter in his cabin, rancher Clyde McCarley knocked on his door and asked about signing up for a class.

"It's mighty dadgum interesting to me that some people can say anything they want, and you make a statement and they bring down the house on you," McCarley said.

Mustafaa Carroll, executive director of the Texas Council on American-Islamic Relations, said the group is watching how the state responds to Keller's ad and whether the agency revokes his instructor license.

"We try not to give too much credibility to some of these people who do outlandish things," Carroll said. "But there are some issues that we do have to address."

Jeremy Mayfield, Former NASCAR Star, Arrested For Meth Possession

Jeremy Mayfield, the former NASCAR star who was suspended indefinitely in 2009 for various drug offenses, has reportedly been arrested for possession of meth.

Mayfield, 42, got popped on Tuesday at his western North Carolina home and charged with possession of methamphetamine, according to The Associated Press.

Records from the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office indicate that he was charged with possessing 1.5 grams of meth. Here's Jeremy Mayfield's mug shot ...

The former Pocono 500 winner posted $3,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in district court on Wednesday, and he may face other charges as well.

Officials tell the AP that approximately $100,000 worth of merchandise from businesses in neighboring Lincoln County was found in Mayfield’s home.

The items found included welding equipment, truck parts and various other items that were reported stolen. He denies this - and the meth possession.

Daniel Marin, Mayfield’s D.C.-based attorney said that the search of his client’s home was made on a “baseless allegation,” and he is denying all charges.

Mayfield showed promise in his early racing career but was suspended in 2009 when NASCAR said he tested positive for meth from a random drug test.

Mac Vs. PC: Ultimate Laptop Lab Test

There are 260 million laptops and desktops in American homes and offices, and many of their users back their favorite side in the Mac vs. PC battle with a passion. But we wanted to cut though the rhetoric and get some hard data. For our showdown between these rival operating systems, we got two laptops with nearly identical specs?one Mac and one PC?and subjected them to a host of different of tests. When the dust settles, which is triumphant? By John Herrman

1 of 8

The desktop operating system may soon be dead. Apple's latest release of OS X, Lion, shows a heavy influence from iOS, the operating system found on iPhones and iPads. Likewise, the upcoming Windows 8 OS, expected in 2012, is inspired by smartphones. Yet the personal computer itself is far from gone. Sales may be down, and tablets may be hot, but there are still more than 260 million laptops and desktops that serve as the primary window through which Americans work and play. And many people feel their computer choices define them?allegiance to an OS can be as passionate as loyalty to a sports team or a political party. Well, it's time to stop the bickering and cut through the rhetoric and marketing once and for all. We purchased two near-identically specced laptops, one with Windows 7 and another with Mac OS X Lion, and subjected them to a brutal battery of tests to see which UI has the higher IQ.

How We Tested

Processor tests were conducted with benchmark software Geekbench 2.1.13, which assigned each machine a performance score. The Cinebench 11.5 benchmark was used to test raw graphics capability in frames per second (fps). Our gaming test relied on Valve's Portal 2 run at high-quality settings. For video conversion, we used HandBrake 0.9.5 to convert a 720p H.264 video to a mobile size. App-launch stress testing used Microsoft Office (Word and Excel), Adobe Photoshop, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and HandBrake. We played a YouTube HD video to see how severely Flash video strained each system's processor. For the compression test, we compressed 786 megabytes of files using the operating systems' built-in archive functions.

Boeing to Build Private Space Taxis in Old NASA Shuttle Hangar (SPACE.com)

This story was updated at 11:22 a.m. EDT.

Aerospace giant Boeing has inked a deal to use an old space shuttle hangar at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida as the headquarters to build and test the private company's new spaceship designed to ferry astronauts to and from the International Space Station, company officials announced today (Oct. 31).

Boeing is making Florida the headquarters of its space taxi venture, a move that will add up to 550 new jobs in the area, Boeing's vice president and program manager for commercial crew vehicles said in a news briefing today from Kennedy Space Center.

The retirement of NASA's 30-year space shuttle program in July was accompanied by devastating job losses within Florida's so-called Space Coast. Boeing's new deal is expected to revitalize the area's strong aerospace legacy, and will help breathe new life into NASA's Florida spaceport

"It's a great day for NASA, Kennedy Space Center, Boeing, Space Florida and the commercial space industry here on the Space Coast," NASA's deputy administrator Lori Garver said.

Boeing ironed out the details of the 15-year deal with Space Florida, an aerospace economic development agency supported by the state. The veteran aerospace company will rent one of the space shuttle processing hangars ? Orbiter Processing Hangar Bay 3 ? at NASA's Florida spaceport.

"Boeing Company has selected Florida as its commercial crew program office," said John Mulholland, vice president and program manager of commercial programs at Boeing. "In addition, we plan to manufacture and test Boeing's CST-100 in this facility ? and launch from right here on Florida's Space Coast."

Boeing is expected to use the hangar to build and test its CST-100 (short for Crew Space Transportation-100) capsule, which is being designed as a space taxi to bring astronauts to and from destinations in low-Earth orbit, such as the International Space Station. [CST-100: Photos of Boeing's Private Space Capsule]

"Neither NASA nor the Space Coast can afford to stand still," NASA chief Charles Bolden said in a statement. "We must be aggressive in pursuing this next generation of space exploration ? and the jobs and innovation that will accompany it."

Boeing's proposed gumdrop-shaped capsule will carry up to seven passengers and launch on an Atlas 5 rocket made by the United Launch Alliance company, company officials have said. The firm is aiming to have the capsule operational by 2015, Mulholland said.

NASA retired its 30-year space shuttle program in July, creating a gap in American human spaceflight capabilities. The agency is currently relying on Russian Soyuz vehicles to carry astronauts to the space station and back, at a reported price of approximately $350 million per year.

In April, Boeing received $92 million from NASA during the second round of the space agency's Commercial Crew Development (CCDev) program. The company also received $18 million for the CST-100 during the first round of funding in February 2010.

Through CCDev, NASA is seeking to improve the capabilities of private spaceflight. Three other companies received funding from NASA as part of the second round of the CCDev program. The agency is hoping that commercial vehicles will be ready to carry astronaut passengers by the end of 2016. ?

Boeing has also teamed up with private space company Bigelow Aerospace, which is developing a commercial space station made of inflatable habitats. In the agreement, Boeing's CST-100 will be used to transport commercial and government clients to Bigelow's space station.

With commercial companies, like Boeing, taking over routine flights to destinations in low-Earth orbit, NASA can focus on developing its next-generation rocket and capsule for deep space exploration.

"The next era of space exploration won't wait, and so we can't wait for Congress to do its job and give our space program the funding it needs," President Obama said in a statement. "That's why my Administration will be pressing forward, in partnership with Space Florida and the private sector, to create jobs and make sure America continues to lead the world in exploration and discovery."

As part of NASA's new direction, the Obama Administration has challenged NASA to send humans to an asteroid by 2025 and on to Mars by the 2030s.

"America has been the world leader in space exploration for more than 50 years, and if we stick to the ambitious plan laid out by the President and Congress, we will be the leader for the next half century," Florida's Senator Bill Nelson said.

The new deal with Boeing also marks a new direction for NASA's Florida spaceport. Following the retirement of the space shuttle program, Kennedy Space Center is being rejuvenated to support future NASA ambitions, in addition to hosting commercial and military endeavors.

"Kennedy continues working to bring new commercial space activities to the center," Kennedy Center Director Bob Cabana said in a statement. "Partnering with Space Florida to enable commercial space operations at Kennedy will help NASA maintain facilities and assets while supporting our nation's space objectives and expanding opportunities for the U.S. economy."
