South Africa v England: Tom Rees backs old team-mates to match Boks' back row

?But for me, the thing which excited me the most and which I found the most interesting through all that rather sadly was my experiences with the doctors and surgeons who kept having to put me back together.

?There are plenty of people in rugby who don?t care what?s wrong with them, they just want it fixed, but a fair few of us wanted to understand that and make use of the top people around you. It?s something I am very excited about.?

He is also excited about the Test series about to take place in South Africa and believes that England will win at least one rubber, even if they do not win the series.

England against South Africa is always a Test match with a ferocious edge. Both teams reached their nadir this century against one another ? South Africa turning Twickenham into a boxing ring when going down to a 50 point defeat in 2002, England humiliated in the pool stage of the 2007 World Cup where they failed to post a single point in response to their opponent?s 36.

Rees, who played in the drubbing in Paris, acknowledges that relations on the pitch between the two sides can be strained, but clearly has a deep respect for the qualities of the South Africans as players and as men.

?They take it all very, very seriously. There?s a huge amount of passion and pride goes into the Springbok jersey,? he says.

?I don?t think it is necessarily a mark of hostility towards other nations because you only have to look at what they do to their own.

?I heard JPR Williams speak quite recently and someone asked ?are there any good South Africans??

?His immediate response, and I from my limited experience agree, was that South Africans are a fantastic people. Yes, they?re abrasive, they?re physical, they?re arrogant as well if you want. But, they will respect you if you will stand up and go toe to toe with them.

?They are some of the most fierce competitors you could ever get, but some of the most down to earth, honest people at the same time.?

Despite this, England will expect few pleasantries from their opponents or their fanatical supporter base in the Boer heartlands until the series is over. Rees?s South African friends have been messaging him all week predicting the Boks to ease home by 60. They aren?t joking.

?As for supporters,, it will be a hostile environment, but I don?t think it?s borne out of any genuine dislike or hatred towards anyone else, it?s just purely national pride.,? Rees adds.

?My experience was that in New Zealand, that was a place where it was more hostile directly towards you and less based around their own side.?

A problem now as in Rees's day, England have long enjoyed the services of a pool of world class back-rowers, without ever quite discovering a world class back-row. The team have struggled to find a balance, as Rees admits: ?If you think back to 2003, the guys there ? Hill, Back, Dallaglio - were THE back-row. Joe Worsley was a rising star and he was restricted to just coming off the bench, Lewis Moody as well ? his career was stalled because these guys were there the whole time.

?That?s because they were injury free and they were playing at the best of their ability. There hasn?t been that level of consistency with the guys there at the moment. There have been injuries, there have been disruptive things. When they start to get going, they get derailed, but we are building towards a critical mass. All of these guys are playing really well and if they stay fit, then three or four should be able to take their game to that next level.

?As for the back-row I enjoyed playing in the most, if I had to pick a starting line-up it would be myself at seven, James [Haskell] at six and Lawrence [Dallaglio] at eight, because as a young guy growing up watching Lawrence and going through the academy with James, being part of that unit was probably my fondest moment on the pitch.?

As for Rees?s former club side, Wasps, he is confident that they will arrest the slump in their fortunes this year after narrowly avoiding relegation.

?We did have a rather exceptional injury list this year and financially we don?t have the same clout as other clubs. Behind the scenes budgets have been tightened and cut.

?To be honest, with everything that happened at the club, it?s a wonder we weren?t relegated by Christmas. The guys did a fantastic job of hanging in there and taking it down to the wire.

?Coming out of that this year, if the sale of the club goes through, we will have a base to build on and a lot of experience in the likes of Haskell and Palmer coming back. Young players have also gained three years? worth of experience in one season owing to being in a situation they would not have been in in an ideal world.

?I?m not saying that they will turn it all around in one year, but they certainly won?t be in that situation again.?

Rather than from the bottom of a ruck, this most devoted of Wasps men will be able to watch the action from the comfort of Imperial?s student bar. The club?s loss, and England?s, will be medicine?s gain.

Apple releases iOS security guide

Apple has released an 18-page iOS security guide, releasing details of its products' security features for the first time.

The guide, released in mid-May, and covers system architecture, encryption, data protection and network security for devices running on iOS, which includes the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch (pdf).

Although a majority of the features discussed in the report have been uncovered by researchers through reverse engineering, one notable topic covered by the document is the multiple security layers implemented into each iOS device.

?The combination of required code signing, sandboxing?and entitlements in apps provides solid protection against viruses, malware and other exploits that compromise the security of other platforms,? states the manual.

Additionally, the report includes insight into the mobile operating system's use of address space layout randomisation (ASLR), a feature designed to mitigate exploits and stifle saboteurs from corrupting a device's memory with malware.

ASLR was previously assumed to be in use by researchers, but the topic was never publicly discussed by Apple.

?Built-in apps use ASLR to ensure that all memory regions are random?ised upon launch,? the security report stated.

"Additionally, system shared library locations are randomised at each device startup."

Although Apple has primarily played its cards close to its chest when it comes to security, the information in the guide could signify a shift in its communication with the public.

Charles Miller, principal research consultant at Accuvant Labs, believes the company may be more concerned with its ?acceptance in the enterprise market.?

?[The guide] is located on the enterprise portion of the website,? Miller told iTnews' sister publication, SC Magazine.

While the guide is a sign that Apple is coming out of its security shell, Miller says that this shouldn't be seen as a new stance on the topic.

?I've thought that a few times?and have been proven wrong, so from now on I need more convincing before I say that again.?

A spokesperson for Apple was not available for comment.

How to photograph Venus and the sun safely

Witnessed only seven times since the time of Galileo, Venus?s solar crossing on Tuesday is a rare and historic event that shouldn?t be missed. Unless modern science discovers a way to delay or halt the aging process, this will be the last Venus transit we?ll ever get to see in our lifetime ? the next transit won?t take place until 2117, or 105 years from now.

The transit of Venus in 2012 will begin at about 3:09 p.m. PT (6:09 p.m. ET) and last nearly seven hours as Venus crosses the face of the sun. Observers on seven continents, including part of Antarctica, will be able to see the Venus transit, though for some skywatchers the event will occur on Wednesday, June 6, due to the International Date Line.

How can Venus transit photographers capture the rare celestial sight safely? The basic requirements for photographing the transit with a digital camera are very much the same as those for imaging sunspots or a partial solar eclipse. And as luck would have it, these same tips can help you snap photos of the partial lunar eclipse on Monday, too!

Here are things to keep in mind when shooting this much-anticipated celestial alignment for posterity:

1. Filter! Filter! Filter! Protect your eyes and equipment by using a proper, visually safe solar filter to cut down the sun?s intense brightness and heat. Use a No. 14 welder?s glass filter or purchase special solar filters ? made of aluminized polyester or black polymer film or metal-coated glass or resin ? from reputable dealers such as Thousand Oaks, Astro-Physics, Kendrick Astro Instruments, and Orion Telescopes & Binoculars. Make sure the filter is securely mounted on the front of your telephoto lens or telescope.

Color-negative or slide film, smoked glass, ordinary sunglasses, Mylar balloons, space blankets, black plastic trash bags, CDs, and polarizing or neutral-density filters used in regular photography are considered not safe for solar viewing, and therefore should not be used. [How to Safely Photograph the Venus Transit (Photo Guide)]

2.Use a telescope or telephoto lens: Decide what you want to record ? the whole disk of the sun with the tiny pitch-black silhouette of Venus in it or close-ups of the ingress (entry) or egress (exit) of Venus? disk along the edge of the sun, to record the so-called "black-drop" effect. This elusive phenomenon was first reported by astronomers during the transit in 1761: As Venus? silhouette makes contact with the solar disk?s edge, the planet?s outline seems to get distorted into a teardrop shape.

To produce a reasonably large image of the sun with a digital camera, you?ll need a telephoto lens or telescope with a focal length of 500 to 1,000 millimeters, or even longer. You?ll also need a tripod or mounting that is beefy enough to carry the load.

You can boost the magnification of your telephoto lens using a 2x teleconverter. For the telescope, try magnifying the image with an eyepiece or Barlow lens.

3. Check your focus: Focusing is especially critical when you use a telescope or long telephoto lens that doesn?t have a fixed "infinity" setting. Don?t rely on the camera?s auto-focus function; switch to manual (M) mode instead and use the edge of the sun or nearby sunspots for focusing. Once you achieve sharpest focus, tape down your lens' focus ring (or lock the telescope focuser) to prevent it from accidentally being moved during the transit. Be sure to recheck your focus as the transit progresses since daytime heating can cause the focus to shift slightly. If needed, wrap a space blanket around your gear to keep it cool.

4. Shoot at high resolution: A digital camera?s image quality and resolution is determined by the number of pixels in its sensor (expressed in millions of pixels, or megapixels). The more pixels the camera has, the better the quality of the image will be. To take full advantage of the camera?s capability, shoot images using high-resolution formats such as the highest-quality JPEG or uncompressed TIFF or RAW files. This will allow you to make 8-by-10, 11-by-14 or larger prints while retaining the images? overall sharpness and smooth tones. [Venus Transit of 2004: 51 Amazing Photos]

    4. How to photograph Venus and the sun safely

5. ?Bracket? your exposures: You can either use the camera?s auto-exposure mode or manual (M) mode to determine your exposure settings. If you prefer to do it manually, try various combinations of shutter speed, f-stop, and ISO speed ? a technique known as ?bracketing? ? and see which ones would come out best and use that as a guide. Don?t be afraid to experiment.

To capture the moment of ingress and/or egress, switch your camera to continuous shooting or ?burst? mode so it can take many shots in quick succession. Be sure to test your equipment and practice your procedure ahead of the transit. Try to do your testing around the same time of day the transit will occur to determine the best exposure to use.

6. Try to minimize vibrations: The slapping of the viewfinder mirror in DSLR cameras can cause blurry images, especially at slow shutter speeds. To reduce camera jitter, operate the shutter button with a long mechanical or electronic cable release, or use the camera?s delay timer. If possible, lock the viewfinder mirror up before each exposure (consult your camera manual on how to do this). Use an ISO setting of 400 or 800 to keep your exposures short. [Amazing Video of the 2004 Venus Transit]

Choose an observing site that is far from vehicular or pedestrian traffic and is sheltered from the wind. A geared head or fluid head on a tripod can eliminate jerky movements and make it easier to manually follow the sun as it moves slowly across the sky. To improve the tripod?s stability, hang your backpack, camera bag, water jug or other weights under its center post. You can also place rubberized footpads or mats under each tripod leg to absorb ground or wind vibrations.

7. Bring spare batteries and memory cards: On Venus transit day, be sure to use a fully charged battery. Keep a spare one as backup since the event can last for an hour or more, depending on your location. (In Hawaii and Alaska, the transit will last approximately 6 hours and 40 minutes from start to finish.)

Digital cameras can be power hogs, especially if you use the LCD screen constantly. If your camera has an AC power adapter and there?s a wall outlet nearby, use them so you don?t have to worry about depleting your battery during the transit.

High-resolution images take up a lot of memory, so use fast, large-capacity storage cards (4 to 8 gigabytes, or more) to avoid running out of memory at a critical time.

8. Shoot the transit in hydrogen-alpha: Specialized hydrogen-alpha telescopes, such as the Coronado PST and SolarMax II series from Meade Instruments, provide stunning details on the sun, which make for a dramatic backdrop to Venus? disk.

Unlike ordinary, unfiltered light from the sun, also known as ?white light,? H-alpha is the red light emitted by hydrogen atoms in the sun?s atmosphere, called the chromosphere, at a wavelength of 656.3 nanometers. If there are large solar prominences along the edges of the sun, it might be possible to glimpse Venus against a prominence right before the planet?s disk enters, and right after it leaves, the sun?s disk.

9. Shoot with video: As with digital cameras, you?ll need a proper solar filter over the camcorder?s lens. Many camcorders have zoom lenses with up to 40x or more optical magnification. To videotape the transit, simply mount the solar-filtered camcorder on a tripod, aim it at the sun and zoom in to its highest power. Use the camcorder?s manual settings, if available, to prevent the sun?s image from getting overexposed. Take short clips every five minutes or so to create a short time-lapse movie of the Venus transit.

High-end DSLRs as well as smartphones are also capable to shooting still shots or HD videos of the transit through a solar-filtered telescope. ? ?

10. Check the latest weather forecast: Get the latest weather update from websites such as the National Weather Service, AccuWeather, The Weather Channel or Weather Underground. You can also view the latest weather images and animations from NOAA?s GOES satellites to help you plan on where to go in case clouds or rain showers threaten your intended Venus transit observing site.

After the transit, be sure to backup all your still images and/or videos right away on DVDs, flash drives or your laptop?s hard drive so you don?t lose any of your precious mementos.

Partial lunar eclipse photography tips
As an added celestial treat to skywatchers, a partial eclipse of the moon occurs early Monday ? the eve of the transit of Venus.

A partial lunar eclipse takes place when the full moon passes through the dark central part of Earth?s shadow, called the umbra, and gets partly covered by the umbra.

Observers in eastern Australia and the Pacific will have a ringside view of the entire two-hour-long eclipse. They will see the moon immersed more than a third of the way (37 percent) into the umbra at maximum eclipse. [Lunar Eclipse of June 4: Observer's Guide (Images)]

Most of North and South America will see the moon set before the eclipse ends; eastern Asia will miss the start of the eclipse since it occurs before the moon rises.

In northeastern United States and eastern Canada, no part of the umbral eclipse will be visible since the event starts after the Moon had set. Western Canada and the U.S. West Coast offer the next-best views ? the moon doesn?t set there until after mid-eclipse.

You can use the same transit setup and technique to photograph the partial lunar eclipse, minus the solar filter, of course. You will not see anything if you leave the solar filter on! Be sure to put it back on before you shoot the transit the following day.

Good luck and clear skies!

Veteran astrophotographers and transitophiles Imelda Joson and Edwin Aguirre are planning to capture the transit from Southern California as the sun sets over the Pacific.

$190,000 settlement in girl's Ecstasy death

By Jason Kandel, NBCLosAngeles.com

LOS ANGELES -- The family of a 15-year-old girl who died of an Ecstasy overdose after a rave at the Coliseum in 2010 has settled in court for $190,000, the lawyer for the family said on Saturday.

Sasha Rodriguez died after the Electric Daisy Carnival dance party at LA?s historic sports venue in a high-profile case that led to the arrests of two former Coliseum executives and a grand jury indictment investigating public corruption.

Rodriguez was underage; the party was intended for those 16 and older.

See the original report, video at NBCLosAngeles.com

Some $175,00?will be paid?to her family?on behalf of the rave concert promoter, Insomniac Inc., and the Coliseum Commission. Coliseum manager Todd DeStefano will pay $15,000, said Steven D. Archer, a lawyer for Sasha?s parents.

A lawyer for?Insomniac, Gary Jay Kaufman, told the Los Angeles Times that Rodriguez?s death was not the promoter's fault.

"Insomniac was sued for who we were, not what we did," he told The Times in a statement. "If Sasha Rodriguez had snuck into the Hollywood Bowl during a Barry Manilow concert and overdosed on some drug, there never would have been a lawsuit.

"Insomniac did not admit any wrongdoing or liability as part of the settlement because they did not in fact do anything wrong."

In a case unrelated to Sasha?s death, prosecutors said in March that six people, including three former top managers for the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, were indicted on conspiracy, embezzlement and bribery charges for allegedly stealing millions of dollars from the stadium.

A Los Angeles County grand jury indicted DeStefano, Coliseum general manager Patrick Lynch, former technical manager Leopold Caudillo Jr., music and event promoters Pasquale Rotella and Reza Gerami, and janitorial contractor Antonio Estrada.

The indictment alleged that Lynch, 55, and DeStefano, 39, participated in a variety of schemes beginning in 2006 that siphoned money from the city- and county-owned stadium into their own pockets, prosecutors said.

Las Vegas embraces rave shunned by Los Angeles

DeStefano, who quit in January 2011, allegedly received more than $1.8 million from Insomniac, the company that produced the Electric Daisy Carnival, and Go Ventures, which also sponsored Coliseum events, the District Attorney said.

"The only thing $190,000 settles is which side had better lawyers,? LA County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, who sits on the panel, said in a statement. ?Unfortunately, this settlement compounds the tragic death of Sasha Rodriguez."

The Coliseum briefly imposed a moratorium on rave events at the venue following Rodriguez's death.

A lawyer for DeStefano declined to comment.
