Four-way race for mayor of Newton

A preliminary election will include four candidates for mayor this September, with three challengers seeking to unseat Mayor Setti Warren.

Warren, Alderman Ted Hess-Mahan, whistleblower Jacqueline Gauvreau Sequeira and Second-Life Computers vice president Tom Sheff all got the requisite 400 signatures in by Tuesday?s 5 p.m. deadline, and each candidate?s signatures have been certified, according to City Clerk David Olson. Sequeira was the last to get her papers in, having dropped them off at City Hall at the close of the business on Monday.

The preliminary election will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Voters will be allowed to select one candidate.

Voters in Ward 1 will also have a preliminary election for the ward seat on the Board of Aldermen, with Allan Ciccone Sr., Alison Leary and Roger Morrocco Jr. all getting in their papers. Those candidates are seeking to fill the seat held by Alderman Scott Lennon until June, when he won the special election to fill the at-large seat vacated by the death of Carleton Merrill.

The top two vote getters in each race will move on to the general municipal election on Nov. 5. Candidates have until Aug. 15 to withdraw from their races and have their names taken off the ballot.

The following is a list of candidates to have their nomination papers returned and certified.
