Cantaloupe illnesses and deaths expected to rise (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Federal health officials said Wednesday more illnesses and possibly more deaths may be linked to an outbreak of listeria in cantaloupe in coming weeks.

So far, the outbreak has caused at least 72 illnesses ? including up to 16 deaths ? in 18 states, making it the deadliest food outbreak in the United States in more than a decade.

The heads of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration said consumers who have cantaloupes produced by Jensen Farms in Colorado should throw them out. If they are not sure where the fruit is from, they shouldn't eat it.

Neither the government nor Jensen Farms has supplied a list of retailers who may have sold the fruit. Officials say consumers should ask retailers about the origins of their cantaloupe. If they still aren't sure, they should get rid of it.

"If it's not Jensen Farms, it's OK to eat," said Thomas Frieden, director of the CDC. "But if you can't confirm it's not Jensen Farms, then it's best to throw it out."

Jensen Farms of Holly, Colo. says it shipped cantaloupes to 25 states, though the FDA has said it may be more, and illnesses have been discovered in several states that were not on the shipping list. A spokeswoman for Jensen Farms said the company's product is often sold and resold, so they do not always know where it went.

The recalled cantaloupes may be labeled "Colorado Grown," `'Distributed by Frontera Produce," `'Jensenfarms.com" or "Sweet Rocky Fords." Not all of the recalled cantaloupes are labeled with a sticker, the FDA said. The company said it shipped out more than 300,000 cases of cantaloupes that contained five to 15 melons, meaning the recall involved 1.5 million to 4.5 million pieces of fruit.

The FDA said none of the cantaloupes had been exported, reversing an earlier statement that some of the tainted melons had been shipped abroad.

Frieden and FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said that illnesses are expected for weeks to come because the incubation period for listeria can be a month or even longer. That means that someone who ate contaminated cantaloupe last week may not get sick until next month. Jensen Farms last shipped cantaloupes on Sept. 10. The shelf life is about two weeks.

"We will see more cases likely through October," Hamburg said.

The Food and Drug Administration said state health officials found listeria in cantaloupes taken from Colorado grocery stores and from a victim's home that were grown at Jensen Farms. Matching strains of the disease were found on equipment and cantaloupe samples at Jensen Farms' packing facility in Granada, Colo.

Sherri McGarry, a senior adviser in the FDA's Office of Foods, said the agency is looking at the farm's water supply and possible animal intrusions among other things in trying to figure out how the cantaloupes became contaminated. Listeria bacteria grow in moist, muddy conditions and are often carried by animals.

The health officials said this is the first known outbreak of listeria in cantaloupe. Listeria is generally found in processed meats and unpasteurized milk and cheese, though there have been a growing number of outbreaks in produce. Hamburg called the outbreak a "surprise" and said the agencies are studying it closely to find out how it happened.

Cantaloupe is often the source of outbreaks, however. Frieden said CDC had identified 10 other cantaloupe outbreaks in the last decade, most of them from salmonella.

Listeria is more deadly than well-known pathogens like salmonella and E. coli, though those outbreaks generally cause many more illnesses. Twenty-one people died in an outbreak of listeria poisoning in 1998 traced to contaminated hot dogs and possibly deli meats made by Bil Mar Foods, a subsidiary of Sara Lee Corp. Another large listeria outbreak, in 1985, killed 52 people and was linked to Mexican-style soft cheese.

Listeria generally only sickens the elderly, pregnant women and others with compromised immune systems. The CDC said the median age of those sickened is 78 and that 1 in 5 who contract the disease can die from it. Symptoms include fever and muscle aches, often with other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Unlike many pathogens, listeria bacteria can grow at room temperatures and even refrigerator temperatures. It is hardy and can linger long after the source of the contamination is gone ? health officials say people who may have had the contaminated fruit in their kitchens should clean and sanitize any surfaces it may have touched.

The CDC said Tuesday that 13 deaths are linked to the tainted fruit. State and local officials say they are investigating three additional deaths that may be connected.

The death toll released by the CDC Tuesday surpassed the number of deaths linked to an outbreak of salmonella in peanuts almost three years ago. Nine people died in that outbreak. The CDC reported four deaths in New Mexico, two deaths each in Colorado and Texas and one death each in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Maryland.

New Mexico officials said Tuesday they are investigating a fifth death, while health authorities in Kansas and Wyoming said they too are investigating additional deaths possibly linked to the tainted fruit.

The CDC reported the 72 illnesses and deaths in 18 states. Cases of listeria were reported in California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. The most illnesses were reported in Colorado, which has seen 15 sickened. Fourteen illnesses were reported in Texas, 10 in New Mexico and eight in Oklahoma.

While most healthy adults can consume listeria with no ill effects, it can kill the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. It is also dangerous to pregnant women because it easily passes through to the fetus. The CDC's Frieden said that two of those sickened were pregnant women but they have since recovered.

KItchen Re-Design: Choosing Your New Kitchen Cabinets | Articles ...

Are you bored with opening up the same kitchen cabinets, every day? Though many owners adore their kitchens, including their kitchen cabinets, there are some who are looking for a change. If you are one of those homeowners, those who are looking for a change, you might want to think about remodeling your kitchen, particularly your kitchen cabinets.

When it comes to kitchen remodeling, there's a widespread mistaken belief that's accidentally thought by many [*T]. That misinterpretation is precisely what kitchen remodeling is. Many presume that to rework a kitchen you want to change everything, from the light fixtures all the way down to the flooring tiles. While a big number of householders do opt to transform their whole kitchen, there are others who only choose to remodel small portions of it. Whether or not you are looking to transform your entire kitchen, all at once, or you if are only looking to remodel a part of it, there's a good likelihood that you could be in the marketplace for new kitchen cabinets; they are one of the most widely remodeled parts of a kitchen.

Although choosing a replacement set of kitchen cabinets may seem like a pretty straightforward task, it is one that you shouldn't make on an impulse. Since you'll be stuck with these new kitchen cabinets, at least till you move or come to a decision to rework again, you will want to make sure that you get your primary choice. There are a number of different ways that you can do this. For the best results, you may want to visit your local home improvement store. When visiting one of your local home improvement stores, you must find a collection of kitchen cabinets on view; actually you might find a reasonably big number of them on display. Viewing each of these kitchen cabinets is a great way to decide which cupboards would look great installed in your kitchen.

As well as visiting your local home improvement store, you may additionally want to look at kitchen cabinets online. Though the shipping for kitchen cabinets is frequently considered pretty high, you may be able to find precisely what you were attempting to find on the internet. It is suggested that you find either an online home improvement retailer or an individual that focuses on making their own kitchen cabinets. Actually if you're searching for a unique set of kitchen cabinets, a set that you cannot find anywhere else, you may be able to order a custom set of kitchen cabinets. The cost could be more than what you intended on paying, but , as formerly mentioned, it is important to get what you want, particularly when transforming your kitchen.

When hunting for the ideal set of kitchen cabinets, for your next kitchen remodeling project, it is really important to keep a number of things in mind. One of those things is what you'll be using your kitchen cabinets for. What you are using your kitchen cabinets for may have an impact on what you can and can't have. As an example, if you'll be using your kitchen cabinets to store your food or your dishes, you will need to be certain that you purchase drawers that will offer you the most space. While decorative kitchen cabinets are lovely they are often limited on the storage that they have.

As well as the scale of the space for storing, it's also necessary to inspect the dimensions of the kitchen cupboard itself. In the United States, most home improvement stores sell kitchen cabinets that are not fully put together, but they are regularly precut to size. It could be feasible to change the measurements, but you may find it to be difficult and pricey to do so. Though you may be more nervous about the color or design of a kitchen cabinet set, it is very important to recollect the fundamentals. Even the most pretty kitchen cabinet set won't do you any good if it cannot be installed in your kitchen.

By keeping the already mentioned points to mind , you should be able to go out and find the kitchen cabinet set that you were searching for. Once you have found the kitchen cupboard set of your dreams, the transforming may begin. Whether you decide to install your own kitchen cabinets or you let a pro do it for you, your drawers may be installed in as little as a day or two.

If you're thinking about doing a kitchen renovation then one of the things you will need to consider is the type of kitchen cabinets you may use. Selecting the right kitchen cabinets can take effort and time so it's best if you do that ahead.

Alternative Methods Of Education

Alternative education is also identified as non-traditional educational or an educational alternative. Educational alternatives are repeatedly rooted in various philosophies which are fundamentally different from traditional education. Educational alternatives houses charter schools; alternative schools, independent schools, and home-based learning, but always focus on the value of small classes, close relationships between students and teachers, and a sense of community. There is other word which is used in place of alternatives by many educational professionals like non-traditional, non-conventional, or non-standardized, although these terms are used somewhat less frequently and may have negative connotations and multiple meanings. The extensive variety of educational alternatives is found at the elementary, secondary and tertiary level of education.

These general categories are further broken down into more specific practices and methodologies.

The choice of schools includes entirely independent schools with their own setting and it is open to all students in their communities.? Among these there are charter schools combining private initiatives and state funding and magnet school which attract students to particular themes. An Alternative school is an educational establishment with a set curriculum and methods of teaching. An alternative school is a learning Institute that follows a curriculum and method that is nontraditional. Alternative education of at-risk students and drop out students is designed to prevent or discourage students from leaving school before they graduate .It is believed that leaving school without a diploma negatively impacts the lives of individuals both their professional and personal lives.

Their personal lives are also in risk because dropping out of high school correlates with captivity.

School is not easy for kids with bipolar, because as an adult it becomes a struggle to getting to a place on time, paying attention and getting things done on time. There are many alternative educational methods which have come across and the internet has opened a whole new world of teaching!! Kids who undergo some kind of disorder like bipolar, dyslexia and learning disabilities, for them alternative methods of education is very beneficial.? A boy with bipolar struggled in a traditional school. He was also suffering with the learning disabilities such as Central Auditory Processing Disorder.? But the teachers and administrative staff could just not believe that he could have LDs as well...so he was not even tested for LDs until his 11th grade year. The teachers could not figure out how to teach a 16 year old in 11th grade with a 2nd grade reading comprehension level. The Bipolar undergoes multiple mood swings a day and trying to find a combination of medicines that work is by itself a tedious task. These types of kids confront so many problems when they are taught in normal school, that it?s better to teach them using the alternative method of education.

If you are a parent and are worried about your child?s admission in India, and witness the admission season in full swing with OSA.? An online admission agent, we do everything for you right from giving you a choice of schools in India through our online school directory to scheduling an interview for your child from a number of schools. Admissions couldn?t get easier, but then, that?s because OSA understands parental woes that crop up during admission and is dedicated to ease the load off your shoulders.OSA also posts Blogs on the Internet on topics related to education and parenting and understands a child?s world perfectly.

Libyan justice minister: Lockerbie case 'closed' (AP)

zv knod ,v LONDON ? Scotland has asked Libya's new authorities to help track down those responsible for the 1988 Lockerbie airplane bombing, but the country's transitional justice minister told reporters Monday "the case is closed."

In Tripoli, Mohammed al-Alagi noted that the only person charged with the bombing ? former Libyan intelligence officer Abdel Baset al-Megrahi ? was freed on compassionate grounds in 2009 because of illness.

There is no reason to keep dragging the case into court, al-Alagi said.

Britain's Foreign Office, however, stressed late Monday that Libyan authorities have assured Prime Minister David Cameron that they would cooperate with the United Kingdom in the investigation.

"Having spoken with the National Transitional Council this evening, we understand that this remains the case," the Foreign Office said in a statement in response to al-Alagi's remarks.

The Scottish prosecutors' office said Monday it had written to the National Transitional Council asking for written evidence and witnesses that could aid the inquiry into the bombing of the New York-bound Pan Am plane over the Scottish town killed 270 people, most of them American.

The investigation "remains an open inquiry," it said.

Scottish authorities have said that al-Megrahi's trial had found that he "acted in furtherance of the Libyan intelligence services in an act of state-sponsored terrorism and did not act alone."

He was sentenced to life in jail in 2001, but released after doctors said he was dying of prostate cancer and estimated he had three months to live.

He remains alive, though reportedly in poor health, in Tripoli. His release infuriated the families of many Lockerbie victims.

U.S. senators in New York have asked Libya's transitional government to hold al-Megrahi fully accountable for the Pan Am bombing by sending him back to prison.

The bombing remains Britain's worst terrorist attack.

Algerians ignore latest protest call _ for now

(AP) ? A new "day of rage" was called recently in this violence-scarred North African nation. But when the allotted time arrived, nobody showed up: The colonnaded boulevards in the heart of Algiers on May 1st Square were quiet, with just a few scattered shoppers milling about.

Like much of the rest of the Arab world, protests swept through Algeria earlier this year calling for more democracy, but they have since fizzled. The latest call on Facebook and other social networking sites for a new revolt on Sept. 17 was roundly ignored.

The fall of Moammar Gadhafi ? a close ally of Algeria ? in neighboring Libya after a seven-month civil war has turned the focus onto Africa's largest country, and the question of whether its military-dominated government could also succumb to the uprisings sweeping the region.

This oil-rich country sees small protests nearly every day over economic and social issues by a population that is fed up with its government. But some Algerians fear the bloodshed and uncertainty seen in other Arab uprisings.

They have reason to be wary: 20 years ago, Algeria's army stepped in to stifle burgeoning political freedoms, leading to a decade of insurgency that pitted security services against the armed supporters of a popular Islamist movement and left an estimated 200,000 Algerians dead.

The civil war left deep divisions in Algerian society and a lingering fear of security forces. That, along with government largesse stemming from oil wealth, has kept the lid on the situation here.

"The country is on the edge of an explosion, the regime has only held on by spending billions, but for how long?" asked Sherif Arbi, a pro-democracy activist, on the day the protest didn't happen. "This is just a postponement."

In fact that same day, just on the other side of town in the neighborhood of Diar Chems, there were riots over the promised distribution of new housing units. Two days later, protesters blocked the main road of the capital's Beau Fraisier neighborhood over the same issue.

This month alone nearly every city in the country has seen some kind of protest, usually ranging from between dozens and hundreds of participants, of people angry over the lack of water, housing, electricity or calling for higher wages.

A quarter of the population lives under the poverty line and unemployment is rampant.

Until now, however, the widespread anger of ordinary people over bread and butter issues has not coalesced into a united call for change. People are just as suspicious of opposition politicians and democracy activists as they are of the despised regime.

"Algerians are enormously unhappy with their current situation for a whole slew of reasons," said John Entelis, an expert on Algeria at Fordam University, adding that for now the government has the means to placate them. "The state has an economic capacity to buy them off, at least for a short term."

In addition to ending a long-running state of emergency law and promising a freer media, President Abdelaziz Bouteflika defused the first wave of protests by extending key subsidies and boosting wages for the police, army, government employees and health workers.

Recently though, educational unions have said their raises weren't enough.

"If the government does not review the increase in salaries, we will go back on strike," Larbi Nouar, head of the largest union of secondary school teachers, told The Associated Press.

Unlike Tunisia and Egypt, where long-serving regimes were overthrown in uprisings this year, Algeria has the funds to "buy the peace," in the words of Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia.

The nation of 35 million is the world's fourth-largest exporter of natural gas and the central bank announced last week it had currency reserves of $173 billion.

Algerians are also less likely to protest because many are disillusioned by the results of the so-called Arab Spring, said Mohand Berkouk, the director of the Center for Strategic and Scientific research in Algiers.

"The political changes in the (Arab) world have not brought the expected results, notably democracy," he said, pointing to the bloody situation in Yemen and Syria as well as the persistent uncertainty in Egypt and Tunisia.

"These examples of instability do not motivate the Algerians, who, it must be strongly emphasized, have already suffered two decades of violence and terrorist atrocities," he noted.

Shopkeepers around May 1st Square said Saturday they didn't want any trouble in their neighborhood and had planned to prevent any protest themselves.

"Those who want to make a revolution, they just have to go back to their own neighborhoods in their own cities, we have had enough of demonstrations disrupting the peace of the residents and hampering local business," said Farid Sekfali, who owns a local shoe store.

Under Bouteflika and an amnesty program, most of the combatants laid down their weapons over the past decade, but a hard core of fighters that pledged allegiance to al-Qaida in 2006 remains and periodically carries out attacks.

In some ways, Algeria was a forerunner of the Arab Spring. Enormous popular demonstrations against a sclerotic government dominated by unimaginative generals in 1988 brought unprecedented political opening in the region ? at the cost of 500 lives.

Following those iconic protests, which filled places like May 1st Square and the colonial era avenues of downtown Algiers, the press was liberalized, political parties legalized and competitive elections were held for the first time.

A moderate Islamist party, the Islamic Salvation Front, dominated the first round of the 1991 parliamentary election, prompting the generals to cancel the runoff, snuffing out the short-lived democratic experiment and sparking a civil war.

"In some ways, they view themselves as having been the first of the Arab states to have undergone a democratic revolution, but it was overturned," noted Entelis.

Despite the president's promises of political reforms ahead of 2012 parliamentary elections, the generals are looking increasingly in charge in the country ? which bodes ill for further political opening.

Over the last year, several of Bouteflika's close associates were swept up in a corruption investigation initiated by the military, and the 74-year-old president's health is also failing.

Bouteflika attempted to attract more foreign investment into the petroleum sector and diversify the economy in effort to create much needed jobs. These efforts now appear to be flagging as the generals move back to the state-dominated economics of the past decades ? the same policies that brought the country to its current impasse.

"For the short term, I think we're looking at the status quo," said Entelis. "But a status quo is just going to make the situation worse in the medium and long term."

Post Automation; A Time-Saving Real Estate Marketing Idea | Real ...

time saving social networking, real estate marketing ideaQuite often I hear the question ? How much time do I need to spend at social networking to be effective? Many of us sit down, open up Facebook and we are off and running. We start interacting with our friends ? commenting, liking and sharing along the way. We click on a friend?s name to see what?s going on in their life, then another friend, and so on? Pretty soon an hour has passed and we haven?t really accomplished any marketing.

Social networking shouldn?t take more than twenty minutes a day if all you have to do is check your inbox and messages. And, in that period of time you will still have time ?comment, like and share?, reaching out to friends and prospects. After all, that is what this real estate marketing idea is all about.

Post automation helps with this problem and it is a good real estate marketing idea. Once a week you set up all of your posts in a spreadsheet, then upload them (in bulk or one at a time) at either Hootsuite or SocialOomph, and then you can rest assured that all of your posts will be posted every hour or so through out the week.

Automation with Hootsuite

post automation at hootsuite, a good real estate marketing ideaThere are a couple of ways to send out these saved posts to your social networking sites?let?s start with the free tool-hootsuite.com. The free version of hootsuite allows you to add 5 social networking sites including; Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, WordPress, Ping, WordPress, Myspace, Foresquare, and Mixi. This will take you to hootsuite and provide for you the key, highlight and copy the key then paste it in the hootsuite box and click Submit.

Go to your spreadsheet, highlight and copy your post, then paste in the Compose Message box. Click on the icons that you want this message sent out to, then click on the middle icon that says 30 (this is your calendar). Set the day and time you want your message to go out?then click on Schedule.

When you click on the social networking tab, at the top of the dashboard, and note that all the way over to the right you will find your Pending Posts that are scheduled.

Also in that same screen you can interact with some of your social networking sites. For instance, click on the Twitter tab?you can see and respond to Twitter posts, Mentions and Direct Messages. In the Facebook section you can ?comment, like & share? posts written by your friends.

Looking for growth in Maine's agricultural economy ? Maine ...

Maine?s agricultural sector has played a prominent role in the state?s economy, culture and environment for more than a century. Of Maine?s approximately 20 million acres, about 1.35 million are devoted to some aspect of farming. Figures from the 2007 United States Department of Agriculture Census indicate Maine?s 8,100 farms produce a wide variety of crops ? about 80 ? on farms that range in size from less than an acre to several thousand acres.

The state?s contribution to U.S. agriculture is notable. Maine ranks eighth in the nation for potatoes, according to a 2003 study by Planning Decisions Inc., and 12th for fruit exports, according to the USDA. Economically Maine?s farms produce about $617.2 million in agricultural yield, placing it second to Vermont in New England and accounting for about 25 percent of New England?s total production, according to USDA data.

But farmers today face a changing landscape. Culturally, the buy-and-eat local food movement is growing, as individuals are paying increasing attention to how and where their food is grown. Meanwhile, health concerns are increasing, with record numbers of U.S. residents classified as obese and facing health risks from heart disease and diabetes.

The percentage that food purchases take from household budgets has increased due to stagnant income levels, higher fuel prices and resulting higher food prices. Environmentally, freshwater access across the globe is diminishing as human populations and corresponding irrigation systems rise. Finally, increasing volatility in weather patterns has increased farming?s unpredictability.

Fortunately, Maine?s agriculture can be competitively positioned to capitalize on opportunities emerging from these shifts. Unlike other areas in the country, it has abundant access to freshwater. USDA figures from 2010 show that relative to other states in New England, Maine has a large undeveloped land base with farm real estate that is the least expensive in New England and the mid-Atlantic.

Maine also has an established diversified farming sector with a knowledge base that helps existing growers as well as new start-ups. Finally, the market potential of 60 million people within a day?s drive of the state is an exciting prospect for Maine agriculture.

These factors give the state?s growers very rich possibilities, but farming in Maine faces several serious problems. To gain insight into the state of farming in Maine and how growers view their future, a team of University of Maine faculty, funded by the University of Maine System Board of Trustees, interviewed farmers about threats, opportunities and their needs for the future. Led by John Jemison, Jane Haskell, Damon Hall and I interviewed about 180 farmers, including dairy, potato, beef, apple, blueberry and vegetable farmers. We also interviewed organic farmers, ornamental producers, several mixed groups of farmers and a group of crop consultants.

Across all farming sectors, farmers are optimistic about the positive effect of the local food movement on markets. Consumer interest in local food has boosted both direct markets such as community-supported agriculture groups (where individuals pay a fixed amount before the growing season in exchange for a portion of the farm?s produce over the season) and farmers markets. Maine has doubled its farmers markets in the last five years to about 100 today, and all indications are this growth will continue.

But to expand beyond these important but relatively small direct markets, improvements in Maine?s limited distribution system and processing facilities are required. Growers who wish to transport products from rural places throughout the state are not close to rail systems or major highways. Transportation costs are driven up by time and the use of smaller conveyance systems to move products. Facilities for large-scale animal processing often are located out of state or in the southern third of the state, driving up product costs.

Other issues farmers discussed are the substantial barriers farmers face to enter the field of agriculture. Farming requires huge capital investment in land, equipment and inputs, both at start-up and subsequently in necessary farm improvements to stay competitive. Despite the work by Maine Farmland Trust, access to affordable land is an increasingly serious problem.

Managing the large debt burden is a major concern to farmers. Both new and veteran farmers need affordable health care for themselves and their families. Farmers perform very physical work in sometimes harsh conditions. They often can afford only catastrophic health care plans and speak of the very real risks of not being able to pay for more routine health care needs.

Expanding and developing Maine?s agriculture ensures that the state extends its commitment to producing goods on working landscapes, helps ensure food security for the state?s residents and supports an industry that helps rural communities stay vibrant and self-sustaining. Our research suggests that we can take actions to enhance agriculture in Maine.

Public policy and public-private partnerships supporting improvements in transportation and processing infrastructure, as well as incentive mechanisms to preserve farmland, would help anchor and grow farming. Affordable health care also would promote long-term viability. A food-secure future is dependent on a strong Maine agriculture. This includes greater support for our local farmers today, the state making infrastructure investments to create market opportunities and Maine institutions purchasing greater amounts of Maine-grown food.

Perhaps most importantly, we need to invest in the next generation of farmers and underwrite educating them in the science, business, communication and marketing skills necessary for farming success.

Update The Look of Your Home For Less With Flooring Wholesale ...

There are several different ways to go about updating the interior design of your home, but investing in new flooring is one of the best options. New flooring can bolster the appearance and atmosphere of any room in the home. If pricing considerations are holding you back, you probably haven?t looked into flooring wholesale. By purchasing flooring on a wholesale basis, you can shave some money off of your total bill; learn more below.

What is Wholesale Flooring?

Flooring wholesale companies make their bread and butter by selling large quantities of carpeting, wood flooring and tile flooring to contractors and other professionals. Many times, though, such companies are more than willing to sell to the general public. By tracking down a wholesale flooring company, you can gain access to a large array of inexpensively priced flooring. Many times, you can find considerable savings on the same exact flooring that you?d find at any popular home improvement store. Shop a selection of wholesale flooring to open up a whole new world of great interior design opportunities.

Carpeting for Less

Who can resist the warm, comfortable allure of luxurious carpeting? It?s no surprise that carpeting is such a popular choice for dens, living rooms, family rooms, bedrooms and many other parts of the home. You can buy many popular brands and style of carpeting from a flooring wholesale company for a fraction of what you?d spend elsewhere. For that reason, it is feasible to lay down new carpeting in several rooms in your home at once; after all, you can buy a lot more carpeting for less.

Affordable Tile

The right tile flooring can really jazz up a kitchen or bathroom. There is no reason to stick with dull, played-out designs, when there is a big, wide world of appealing options out there. Wholesale flooring companies can connect you to a stunning range of high-quality options that won?t break the bank. Since wholesale tile flooring is so affordable across the board, it?s easier to afford more glamorous or sophisticated options. In other words, you won?t have to settle for less.

Cost-Effective Wood Flooring

Sleek wood floors can really enhance the interior design scheme of a home. They are also a lot of fun, since you can dress them up with colorful throw rugs. If you have allergies or asthma, wood floors tend to be ideal options, too; dust has nowhere to hide. Wood flooring is often quite expensive, which may cause you to put your renovation plans on hold; instead, just check out the selection at a flooring wholesale company. Such flooring is not only cost-effective, but it features impeccable quality and first-rate designs. There?s no need to settle for cheap, unappealing flooring. You can get the style that you want by shopping for wood flooring at a wholesale store.

Update Any Room in the House

Certain types of flooring work better in certain rooms; as noted above, carpeting is ideal for many rooms, including bedrooms, family rooms, dens and living rooms. In areas where water abounds, tile flooring is the best choice. Wood flooring can be used just about anywhere, as long as you buy the right variety. A wholesale flooring expert will be able to give you sound advice about the flooring that is right for you. No matter which room you?d like to update ? or if you?d like to update all of them ? wholesale flooring is a top-notch option.

Give Your Home a Complete Face-Lift

In order to update the flooring in every room of their homes, many homeowners handle one or two rooms per year; additional room renovations simply won?t fit into their budgets. By going the wholesale route, however, you will be able to update the designs of more rooms for less money. Wholesale flooring makes it possible to update the look of a large portion of your home in one fell swoop.

Achieve a Unique Look

When you shop in regular flooring stores, your options are decidedly limited. In turn, achieving a truly unique look is a lot trickier. Flooring wholesale puts a dizzying array of options at your fingertips. You will rejoice in the sheer variety that you will be able to explore when you give wholesale flooring a try. Suddenly, it is easy to give every room in your home distinct flair and eye-catching personality. Once you?ve shopped a selection of wholesale flooring, you will never go back to buying it in regular stores again ? and your home will never look more amazing or stylish.

VoIP security threats and issues

VoIP services are the rage back in the field of telecommunications. But like any new technology comes with its advantages and disadvantages;. The same applies to VoIP VoIP security is currently one of the most talked about topics. Unlike e-mail and Web services, VoIP uses a unique system that works by translating voice signals into data packets. These data packets can be easily sent through an Internet service to the recipient. ToThe target packet data is then converted back into voice. Since VoIP uses high-speed connection to the Internet to transmit packets efficiently, hackers can easily tap into this information.

Although VoIP networks provides companies of all types with a low-cost solution for their communication needs;. A variety of network administrators are not aware of the threats in the network, the VoIP security should be exposed to be paid in the vicinityAttention because it is one of the biggest drawbacks of this technology. A typical VoIP network can be used as conventional LAN or WAN, in which all the computers in the network subject to security threats and violations are handled.

Some of the most dangerous security threats to VoIP networks are facing, as listed below. Every network administrator should be well informed about these attacks and injuries caused by the negligence of individual directors, may lead to valuable informationand confidential data from being stolen.

A different kind of threat to the security of VoIP networks is linked to the wiretapping. It is generally transmitted as voice (in the form of data packets) over an Internet connection, hackers can use this connection and steal valuable information. What's more is that once a hacker can cause snooping the network has the unfair advantage of further damage to the introduction of DoS attacks is. Is a 'Green Smartphone' Even Possible? (ContributorNetwork)

Apple has made lots of noise about its gadgets' toxin-free designs and low power consumption. Not to be outdone, Samsung has released the Replenish, "An Android with the Earth in mind." You can even get it on Credo Mobile's network, if your idea of an environmentally-friendly smartphone is one where less than a dollar of your monthly bill goes to support progressive causes.

Annie Leonard's video, The Story of Electronics, is a good animated introduction to green electronics. What makes a smartphone really "green," though ... and is it even possible?

New building materials

The Recompute desktop PC has an outer case made of cardboard. It's a safe bet that most smartphones and tablets aren't going to go that route, especially when you need to keep them in your pocket or handbag. (Can you imagine what would happen if it rained?)

In the smartphone world, the Replenish and iPhone 4 might be the closest we've come. The Replenish's case is made partly out of recycled plastic, while the iPhone's is made out of metal and glass -- more recyclable than some materials.

"Recyclable" doesn't mean "recycled," though. In some ways, it's just a new buzzword to make you think that something is green. And in the tech industry, "recycling" often means shipping stuff out to China, where kids breathe in toxic fumes as they take it apart for scrap. (Fortunately, there are greener gadget recyclers out there.)

New power source

You probably know you can buy solar chargers for smartphones, now. Aside from for truckers and travelers, though, they're not going to see much use when it's quicker to charge off the USB or wall socket ... which makes those chargers just more new electronic gadgets made out of toxic chemicals.

What about human-powered smartphones? You could charge them up just by walking, whenever you're on the go. The technology isn't quite there yet, though, and is still the subject of research papers.

What to do, then?

The greenest smartphone is the one you have right now. Every year that you stick with last year's model is another in which a chunk of the environment wasn't torn up to make a smartphone.

The second-greenest? Not a refurb or "green" phone, but one that you love so much that you keep it for years and years. What good is it that your Samsung Replenish is partly recyclable, when you're going to recycle it much sooner than if you'd bought something else?

If you find a green or refurb phone that you love, more power to you, but that's just one consideration out of many. And one that, right now, is more bark than byte (so to speak).

Another thing you can do

Whatever smartphone that you get, you can invest in green energy for it by buying a smartphone-sized carbon offset, which are available in some stores. Maybe you don't have the option of using green energy where you live, but buying an offset can help to create a world where the next generation does. Just do your homework, and make sure the company offering them is actually doing something that helps.

Syrian forces kill eight near Homs: activists (Reuters)

AMMAN (Reuters) ? Syrian forces shot dead at least six villagers and two rebel soldiers on Monday, in a sweep of countryside north of the city of Homs, one of the most defiant regions in pro-democracy protests, activists and residents said.

Syria's ruling elite, from the country's Alawite minority sect, have intensified military assaults in the last few weeks to stop a six-month uprising that has triggered increasing defections among the mostly Sunni rank and file military.

The United Nations human rights division said that pro-Assad forces have killed 2,700 protesters since an uprising demanding his removal started in March, including at least 100 children.

Human rights campaigners and Western diplomats in Syria also report increased assassinations of protest leaders, more deaths from torture and mass arrests that have seen tens of thousands of Syrians detained, focusing recently on professionals and academics critical of President Bashar al-Assad.

"Crimes against humanity are being committed in Syria and the leaders of the regime will have to answer for them," French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said in remarks at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.

DEFECTORS

The assault on Houla, a collection of villages north of Homs, 165 km (100 miles) north of Damascus, followed a large protest on Sunday demanding Assad's removal. About 12 government soldiers manning rural checkpoints had defected, activists said.

"Several of the defectors put up a fight but they were overwhelmed. The rest were civilians who were killed by the random gunfire from the tanks as they went through al-Houla," said a resident who gave his name as Abu Yazan.

He said 14 people, including school-age students, were arrested in Taldo, Kfar Laha, Takltheb Tibeh and Iqreb villages.

Local activists said troops launched a similar operation on Monday in the northwestern region of Jabal Shahshabo near Turkey and house-to-house raids in the town of Dumair north of the capital Damascus.

Military assaults have been carried out by ultra-loyalist core forces who tend to be drawn from Assad's Alawite sect, an offshoot of Islam.

The Sunni rank and file are usually assigned to man checkpoints under the eye of the Alawite dominated Military Intelligence, a secret police division entrusted with preventing dissent among the military, residents and former officers say.

"The regime is trying to stop the protests everywhere it can, as if it were plugging a leaking pipe. As soon as it closes one hole, water leaks from a dozen others," said one activist in Damascus, where security is particularly tight in central neighborhoods.

An adviser to Assad, on a visit to Moscow this month, said that reports of mass civilian killings have been exaggerated by the media and that the only casualties were 700 soldiers and policemen killed by terrorist groups and a similar number of what she described as mutineers.

The official news agency said an "armed terrorist group" killed four security police overnight in an ambush near Hama, which was among the hardest hit cities in an escalation of military attacks that coincided with the beginning of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan at the start of August.

Assad has repeatedly said he is resisting a foreign conspiracy to divide Syria and that use of force has been limited, with the majority of Syrians backing him.

U.N. REPORT

Kyung-wha Kang, deputy U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, told the forum on Monday that Syrian security forces, "backed by tanks, helicopters and snipers" continue to crush protests in cities including Homs, Latakia, Deraa and Damascus.

A large-scale assault in Homs this month had left at least 23 civilians dead and scores injured, she said, adding that Syrian forces "are reported to have forcibly removed wounded people from hospitals, including from operating rooms, in Homs and prevented medical personnel from reaching the injured."

A National Council formed by the opposition and announced in Istanbul last week, as well as civic figures who met in Syria at the weekend, have appealed to protesters to maintain the peaceful nature of the uprising and warned against falling into what they see as sectarian strife being stoked by Assad.

"Continuation of the peaceful revolt is crucial to achieve a peaceful democratic transition and bring down the tyrannical and corrupt security regime," said a statement issued after a two-day meeting of the National Coordination Commission, a new grouping of mainly secular writers, artists, and intellectuals.

But one activist in Damascus, who declined to be named said: "These calls are fine and dandy but what do you do when protesters are being met with live ammunition and taking to the street to demonstrate is equivalent to attempted suicide?"

"The uprising is remaining peaceful as much because this is a police state and the people do not have weapons as much as it is to high mindedness."

Braves lose heartbreaker against Marlins, 6-5

Mike Stanton, Logan Morrison

updated 10:23 p.m. ET Sept. 19, 2011

MIAMI - The sliding Atlanta Braves stumbled again Monday night, losing 6-5 to the Florida Marlins on Omar Infante's game-ending two-run homer.

Atlanta now has dropped three of four, and its NL wild-card lead is down to 2? games over surging St. Louis, which beat Roy Halladay and the Phillies 4-3 in Philadelphia. The Braves have eight games remaining, the Cardinals nine.

Rookie closer Craig Kimbrel came in to preserve Atlanta's 5-4 lead and retired the first two batters he faced in the ninth. But Emilio Bonifacio then hit a chopper to third baseman Chipper Jones, who could not field the infield hit.

Infante then drove a 1-0 pitch to deep left for his first game-ending homer. Infante's sixth homer of the season came against his former team and handed Kimbrel (4-3) his seventh blown save opportunity in 52 chances.

Dan Uggla and Jason Heyward homered for Atlanta, which scored four runs in the seventh to take the lead. Second baseman Infante had a costly error in the inning, which allowed the Braves to score the tiebreaking run.

Mike Stanton homered twice for the Marlins, and Logan Morrison added a two-run shot. Clay Hensley (6-6) pitched two scoreless innings to get the win.

Braves starter Mike Minor allowed four runs and six hits in 5 2-3 innings. He struck out six and walked two.

Stanton hit a solo shot into the upper deck in left in the first inning, then belted another solo shot in the third for his 34th of the season, tying Miguel Cabrera for second place on the Marlins' single-season list.

The 21-year-old Stanton has two multihomer games this season and four in his career. He also hit a pair at Chicago on July 16.

Ricky Nolasco retired the first 12 batters he faced before Uggla singled leading off the fifth. He allowed five runs, four earned, and five hits in 6 2-3 innings.

NOTES: Gary Sheffield hit 42 home runs for the Marlins in 1996. ... Braves SS Alex Gonzalez is hitting .444 (12 of 27) in his last seven games. ... Marlins RHP Josh Johnson (shoulder) threw a 50-pitch bullpen session. He will be facing batters on Sept. 22 and 27 in Jupiter before shutting it down. Johnson is looking to start opening day next season when the Marlins open their new 37,000-seat stadium. ... Marlins RHP Alex Sanabia will start Saturday at Milwaukee in place of LHP Brad Hand, who will be relegated to the bullpen the rest of the season. ... The Braves will send RHP Randall Delgado to the mound Tuesday. He allowed one run in five innings in his last start on Sept. 14, also against the Marlins. Florida will counter with RHP Anibal Sanchez, who is 4-9 with a 5.09 ERA in his career against the Braves.

How "Probiotic" Microbes Control Your Mind

Over the past several years, there has been a barrage of studies about how the vast population of microbes that live in the gut can influence our mind and mood, evidenced by all the products in the grocery store with "probiotic" now slapped on their labels and the wave of interest in "good" bacteria. Researchers out of McMaster University in Canada, in a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, have shown not only that introducing new kinds of bacteria could actually reduce anxiety, but also how the bacteria could be creating that effect.

Paul Forsythe, an assistant professor in the Division of Respirology at McMaster, was one of the study's co-authors. He and his team fed mice a bacteria called Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and then monitored their behavior to gauge their anxiety level. Lactobacillus is a common bacterium. Strains of Lactobacillus are used in the making of food such as yogurt, cheese and breads. Other strains are found naturally in the human gut. However, the strain used in this experiment, researchers said, is different from any of those.

"We were interested in how changes in gut bacteria might influence the brain and behavior," Forsythe says. So, after giving the mice this strain of Lactobacillus, the researchers put them in a stressful situation, such as swimming in a bucket in which they had no visible means of escape. Researchers left the mice in there until they stopped swimming. Once the test was over, the mice's levels of corticosterone, a stress hormone similar to humans' cortisone, was measured. In mice that were fed the Lactobacillus, the stress level measured by this hormone increased much less than it did in mice who didn't receive the new microbes.

However, the really interesting part of this study was the second step, in which Forsythe and colleagues tried to figure out how bacteria in the gut might have an effect on the brain. Previous studies have shown that certain bacteria can stimulate nerve activity in the stomach. To test that, the researchers severed the vagus nerve, which connects the stomach to the brain. When they ran the same test on the mice with the nerve no longer working, the Lactobacillus had no effect on anxiety.

Forsythe says that the results suggest that the bacteria use the vagus nerve to send signals to the brain. These signals cause a change in the levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid, commonly called GABA, which influences calmness.

Forsythe and John Bienenstock, another of the study's coauthors, say that their mouse test is a long way from showing that mind-altering microbes could have a future in treating conditions such as severe anxiety in humans. But that's what they're hoping for. "The long-term effect of this is the possible uses of bacteria or their products in helping alleviate stress and possibly anxiety or depression," Bienenstock says. "It changes the way we look at these conditions and how they may be treated and may offer some new approaches."

But one of the main issues now?besides that long road of clinical trials that any medication faces to try to suss out its effectiveness, safety and possible side effects?is finding out whether any other kinds of bacteria have the same effect, and whether that effect would translate to humans. Mark Lyte, a microbiologist from Texas Tech Health Sciences Center, tells PM that the strain of bacteria used in this study is not commercially available, and when the researchers tested more common ones, they didn't get the same results. "What they're saying is that this is such a unique strain," Lyte said. "[They] tried another common one, and it didn't do what this does. Will others work? The jury is out. People shouldn't just run out to the store and get probiotics, though."

Nevertheless, Lyte was impressed?it's the first time potential probiotic bacteria have shown a direct effect on brain chemistry. "[It's] a critical step in demonstrating the use of probiotics and bringing them into the human clinic."

Hometownstations.com WLIO Lima, OH News Weather SportsPoll: Americans trust military, but not CongressBy JENNIFER AGIESTA and LAURIE KELLMANAssociated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Congress may be in the doghouse with the American public, but a new poll suggests that the broader government ? especially the military ? gets high marks for keeping the nation safe and secure.

What's more, nearly seven in 10 Americans are trying to make things better by volunteering, a sign that optimism survives in a nation riled by partisan policy fights and economic uncertainty.

?It's very healthy because it indicates that although we are annoyed, skeptical and have less trust than we'd like in our institutions, we are not hopeless,? said David Eisner, president and CEO of the National Constitution Center, which partnered on the poll with the associated Press. ?We believe that the bedrock values and principles that we built our society on are right.?

The public's contempt for Congress exceeds that of other American institutions, including banks, major corporations and the media. the broader government's performance ?making sure that our nation is safe from foreign and domestic threats? received an uptick in confidence from 53 percent a year ago to 72 percent now. and a growing number of people said the government is doing a good job of ?making sure all Americans feel safe, secure and free,? up from 54 percent in August 2010 to 63 percent now.

The military in particular earns the most respect of the survey, with 54 percent deeply confident in the institution.

But deep contempt for Congress and aspects of President Barack Obama's health care law remain among Americans tired of partisan standoffs over basic pocketbook issues. the associated Press-National Constitution Center poll of 1,000 adults, conducted Aug. 18-22, found that 57 percent have little or no confidence in Congress, up from 49 percent last year.

So while Boise, Idaho, retiree Dale Shoemaker, 54, feels safer, he doesn't give the nation's political institutions credit.

?I think we're more secure. there are a lot of professional, talented people doing a tremendous job,? Shoemaker, who used to consider himself a Republican but now is more of an independent. ?But the leadership of the Congress and the Senate are not making decisions about what to do, and they're leaving people hanging.?

It's notable news on the brink of an election year for Obama, the health care law's chief author and the one who made the call in May to take out terrorist chief Osama bin Laden. Congress, too, is taking note of its estimation in the eyes of the voting public as both parties gird for battle over control of the House and Senate.

No party profited politically from the standoff over the nation's finances much of the year, especially by the unseemly debt limit dispute that earned the nation a credit rating downgrade and sank approval ratings for all policymakers involved. the bickering continued even as the unemployment rate refused to drop much below 10 percent.

A poll last month found the infighting sank Congress' approval rating to 12 percent.

Congress and the broader government give Americans heartburn, with one central feature of Obama's signature health care overhaul standing out as an example. more than eight in 10 people surveyed ? 82 percent ? say the federal government should not have the power to require Americans to buy health care insurance. Politically important independents were more aligned with Republicans on the mandate question, with 87 percent who don't identify with one of the two major parties saying government should have no right to require insurance; 95 percent of Republicans agreed, according to the poll.

?I just think that people should have the right to buy health insurance, or not,? said Daisy Mallory, 78, a retired factory worker from of La Grange, Ill., who says Medicare covers her health care costs. Obama, she said, may have misjudged public's opposition to health care mandates. ?I think he understands it better now,? she said.

Obama himself acknowledged that his party took a ?shellacking? in the 2010 midterm elections, when Republicans made the health care law and the Democrats who muscled it through Congress their Issue No. 1 ? and won enough seats to control the House. Obama has said he believes the Supreme Court will uphold the law's constitutionality, but Republicans continue to mention it as a key example of government overreach that they would repeal.

But after nine months in control of the House, Republicans haven't boosted the public's view of Congress.

In the AP-NCC poll, just 8 percent say they are confident in the people running Congress, 10 percent in the federal government. Majorities of Republicans and Democrats lack confidence in congressional leaders, with politically crucial independents showing the sharpest increase in distrust of Congress over the past year. That's up from 49 percent in 2010 to 62 percent now

Even so, most Americans feel safe and more have confidence in the government to keep it that way, the poll shows.

The uptick in approval for the government's handling of national security crosses party lines, but Republicans have shifted sharply. Last year, just 32 percent of Republicans gave the government positive reviews on keeping the nation safe; now, 61 percent of Republicans agree on that. and on making sure Americans feel ?safe, secure and free,? the same group has jumped from 33 percent who said the government is doing a ?good job? to 54 percent now, the poll shows.

The urge to contribute through volunteerism remains strong, according to the poll. nearly six in 10 Americans say the country needs more sense of community and people helping one another. Most ? 69 percent ? have volunteered in the past year. Eight in 10 said they have made a charitable donation of $25 or more during that time.

The AP-National Constitution Center poll was conducted Aug. 18-22 by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications. it involved landline and cellular telephone interviews with 1,000 adults nationwide and has a sampling error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.
